Warren County Falls to Cross Creek

Warren County began their 2011-2012 basketball season November 22 against Cross Creek in Augusta by dropping both games against the AAA Razorbacks. The Screaming Devils traveled to Cross Creek to participate in a Thanksgiving tournament being hosted by Cross Creek.

The Lady Devils took to the court first and struggled to get their offense clicking. Warren County had trouble handling the press from Cross Creek as the Razorbacks opened up a 22-9 lead in the first quarter. The Lady Devils only managed 3 points in the second quarter while the Razorbacks added 16 points to lead by the score of 38-11 at the half. Warren County's offensive woes continued into the second half and the Lady Devils fell to the Razorbacks by the score of 61-20.

Tomeka Harris led the Lady Devils in scoring with 8 points. Ranisha Andrews contributed with 5 points. Tyjah Hill had 4 points and Shea Kuhn added 3 points.

The boy's game had the gym rocking from the opening minutes as neither team was able to lay claim to a substantial lead throughout the game. Cross Creek went on a run at the end of the first quarter to open up a 6 point lead by the score of 12-6. It would be either team's largest lead of the night as the game remained tight for the rest of the way. Warren County outscored the Razorbacks 16-11 in the second quarter and both teams went to the locker room with Cross Creek holding a 1 point lead by the score of 23-22.

The Devils scored 18 points in the third period to take a 2 point lead by the score of 40-38 into the fourth period. The lead swapped back and forth throughout the fourth period. Warren County was down by two when the Devils scored a last second basket to tie the game at 52-52 and send the game into overtime. The Razorbacks outscored the Devils 10-5 in the overtime period to claim a 62-57 victory.

Leading scorer on the night for Warren County was Ed'Ricus Williams with 14 points. Bentravious Ramsey added 13 points. Jabari Wilson and Richard Wilburn were also in double digits with 12 points in the contest. Jeremy Norris contributed with 5 points and Jacquez Menchaca chipped in with 1 point from the free throw line.

Both Screaming Devil teams return to action Friday, December 2 when they travel to Milledgeville to take on the Bulldogs of GMC.

Warthen Leads Arizona to Georgia Sweep

ATLANTA, Ga. - The University of Arizona Wildcat women's basketball team swept its southern swing with a 79-66 win at Georgia State, in Atlanta, on Sunday to go with Friday's 88-46 win at Georgia Southern. The Wildcats move to 2-0 on the season with 49 points from sophomore guard Candice Warthen in the two contests.

"Candice Warthen was hot, shooting the ball really well," head coach Niya Butts said. "She also bailed us out when Davellyn Whyte got into foul trouble in the first half. Davellyn only played six minutes in the first half. Candice stepped up and we knew she was capable of a performance like that. We just hope it continues. This was a great team win overall."

Paced by Warthen's 36 points against the Panthers on Sunday, the Wildcats shot 42.3 percent from the field (22-52), 45.0 percent from behind the arc (9-20) and 81.3 percent from the charity stripe (26-32). Warthen was just three points shy of tying Arizona's school record for points in a game (39) and was 11 of 18 from the field with five three pointers. Warren County Middle School Drops Home Opener

Both Warren County Middle School basketball teams were in action against the Tigers of Washington-Wilkes Saturday for their second game of the season and their first at home. Both games provided fans with close contests until the fourth quarter when the size and depth of Washington-Wilkes began to take it's toll on the Screaming Devils.

The girl's game proved to be a defensive one in the early going. The Lady Tigers jumped out to the early lead against the Lady Devils in what would amount to a low scoring contest for both teams. Warren County had trouble getting their shots to fall from the outside and trailed 6-0 at the end of the first period. Washington-Wilkes scored first in the second period to extend their lead to 8 before Warren County finally got on the board. The Lady Devils would narrow the lead to 4 at the half and went to the locker room down by the score of 8-4.

The third quarter was a defensive one as neither team was able to make a move. Both teams were only able to manage 2 points and the period ended with the score 10-6.

The Lady Tigers' size and depth advantage began to show in the fourth quarter as they began to pull away from what appeared to be a tiring Lady Devil team. The shots began to fall for Washington-Wilkes and the Lady Devils were unable to match with offensive points of their own and fell by the score of 24-6.

Warren County looked as if they might fare a bit better in the early going of the boy's game. The Screaming Devils scored first in the contest and jumped out to an early 12-5 lead by hitting several shots from the outside against the zone defense of the Tigers. Washington-Wilkes quickly switched to a man-to-man defense and managed to narrow the lead. The first period ended with Warren County on top by the score of 13-11.

The Tigers pulled ahead in a closely fought second period to take a 2 point lead to the locker room by the score of 19-17.

The third quarter was all Washington-Wilkes. The Tigers outscored the Devils by 7. Warren County was only able to manage to score on a free throw and found themselves trailing by the score of 27-18 at the end of the period.

The Devils made a run in the beginning of the 4th quarter as they narrowed with back-to-back 3 point shots. Washington-Wilkes would hold on however to win by the score of 33-26.

Both Warren County Middle School teams will be in action at home again Monday afternoon starting at 4:00 against Louisville.

WCMS Boys and Girls Win Season Opener

Both Warren County Middle School basketball teams traveled to Gibson to take on the Glascock County Panthers for their first games of the season Thursday afternoon. The games marked the fourth games of the 2011 season for Glascock.

The girls took to the court first for the Screaming Devils. It looked as if Warren County would run away with the game in the early going as the Lady Devils jumped out to an early 9-0 lead. Glascock would battle back, however, and keep within striking distance all the way to the fourth quarter. The Lady Devils were never able to put the Panthers away and had to fend off a late rally to win by the score of 24-22.

The boy's game was never really in doubt for the Screaming Devils. The Panthers took a brief lead in the opening seconds of the game by hitting a 3 point shot, but the Devils quickly answered and never relinquished the lead after that. Warren County cruised to a 45-19 point victory in the second game of the evening.

Warren County Middle School returns to action Saturday when they play host to Washington-Wilkes. Tip-off for the girl's game is scheduled for 10:00 am.

Warthen Enters 2nd Season at Arizona

The Arizona Wildcats took to the floor last night against Grand Canyon for the first time this year in an exhibition game. Former Screaming Devil standout, Candice Warthen, got off to a good start for the new season with a team high 15 points, 7 assists, and 3 steals to lead the Wildcats to a 81-54 victory. The game marked the second consecutive game that Warthen has led Arizona in scoring.

The Wildcats will be kicking off their regular season with a trip to Georgia to take on Georgia Southern and Georgia State. Warthen and her team will be in Statesboro Friday to take on the War Eagles and Atlanta Sunday afternoon to play Georgia State.

Warren Ends Season With Win

The Screaming Devils entered Friday night's football game against the Aquinas knowing that they needed not only a win over the 7-2 Irish, but a good deal of luck as well if they were to make the playoffs for the seventh consecutive season. Warren County's post season hopes also rested upon Twiggs County upsetting Washington-Wilkes for their first win of the season. As reports trickled in from across the region, it quickly became apparent that Washington-Wilkes would have no problem handling Twiggs County and that Warren County would be playing for nothing but pride on Senior Night.

The week also marked the first full week back for Coach Daniel since the Hancock Central game. Coach Daniel developed his defensive game plan around stopping junior running back, Brendan Douglas of the Irish. Douglas looked as if he was headed to another big night in the early going as he rumbled for a 36 yard touchdown with 6:05 to go in the first quarter. The extra point was good and Aquinas led 7-0.

Douglas added another touchdown in the second quarter with a 2 yard run to extend the lead for Aquinas to 14 after the extra point. The score would be the last for Douglas as Warren County's game plan of shutting down the Irish running game began to fall into place.

Just when it looked that Aquinas was on the way to only their fifth victory in school history over Warren County, the Screaming Devil's offense came alive. With time winding down in the first half, Jabari Wilson stepped in as quarterback for Warren County and connected with Ed'Ricus Williams for a 21 yard touchdown pass with 15 seconds to go in the half. The extra point attempt was no good and the Screaming Devils went to the locker room down by 8.

With the running attack proving ineffective, the Irish went to the air in the 3rd quarter. After completing a long pass down the sidelines, Grey Klosinski went to the air again for the Irish and completed a 10 yard pass to the corner of the endzone. The touchdown and extra point gave Aquinas the lead by the score of 21-6 with 4:36 to go in the 3rd quarter.

Down by more than 2 touchdowns, Warren County wasted no time in putting points on the board and getting back into the ball game. Jabari Wilson carried the ball 39 yards to the end zone exactly 62 seconds after the touchdown pass by Aquinas. The 2 point conversion pulled Warren to within 7.

Wilson would strike again in the 4th quarter with a 16 yard run for a touchdown that drew the Devils to within 1 point of tying the lead. Faced with the decision of kicking the extra point to tie the game or going for two and the lead, Coach Daniel called a timeout to talk to his team. When asked what he told his team in the huddle, Daniel stated, "I just told them they (Aquinas) were tired. Go win the game!" Wilson took the snap over the right side of the line and just got the ball over the goal line as he was going down for the two point conversion and the lead, 22-21.

The Devils added another touchdown late in the 4th quarter with another run by Wilson from the 7 yard line to make the score 28-21.

Jabari Wilson led all rushers for the evening with 157 yards on 15 carries. Wilson also carried the ball for 3 touchdowns and passed for another. Devarius Davis added 41 yards on 6 carries. Richard Wilburn went 2-3 through the air for 39 yards to lead the passing for Warren County. Ed'Ricus Williams had 3 receptions for 73 yards.

The Devil's defense posted their best performance in three weeks as they accomplished their goal of sutting down the running attack of Aquinas. Brendan Douglas was held to his lowest numbers for the Season. Douglas was limited to 15 yards in the 2nd half and held to only 64 yards for the night.

Despite finishing the season with a 7-3 record, the Screaming Devils miss the playoffs for the first time since 2004. The only 3 Warren County losses of the year came to region opponents, two of which came in the final three games. Coach Daniel remained positive as he stated, "I could not be prouder of these young men. They handled everything that happened to them this year with dignity and never quit."

Warren County entered the contest against Wilkinson County needing to win their last two games to make the playoffs. A win by either team Friday night meant that the other team's chances at the post season were greatly diminished. The meaning of the night's game was not lost on Warren County head coach, David Daniel. After being unable to be on the sidelines for last week's loss to Washington-Wilkes, Coach Daniel returned to his post to lead the Devils once again.

Whether due to the added importance of the game or the presence of Coach Daniel, the Screaming Devils seemed to rise to the occasion in the early going of the contest. Warren County put up their best first half offensive performance in weeks as both teams traded the early lead back and forth.

The Warriors struck first on 10 yard run for a touchdown by Wilkinson County quarterback, David Whipple. The extra point gave the Warriors a 7-0 lead with 8:12 to go in the first quarter.

Warren County would answer on their very next possession. Damien Clark connected to Ed'Ricus Williams with a 23 yard pass for a touchdown. The extra point by williams was good to tie the score at 7-7 with 6:15 left in the first quarter.

Wilkinson County would waste no time reclaiming the lead however. On the first play from scrimmage after the kick off, Whipple connected downfield with a Wilkinson receiver for a 50 yard strike to the 6 yard line. Tyler Franklin took the ball to the end zone for the Warriors to once again put Wilkinson County on top. The extra point was no good and Wilkinson County led 13-7.

The offense slowed for both teams as neither was able to add points to the board until late in the second quarter. With less than 3 minutes to go in the half, Damien Clark rifiled a pass across the middle intended for Warren County tight end Deondre Battle. Battle tipped the ball into the air for what looked to be an incomplete pass until Devarius Davis reached out to gather the ball in and carry the ball to the Warrior 15 yard line. After Dextrell Norris got the Devils inside the 5, Davis pounded it the rest of the way to tie the game once again. Williams extra point gave Warren County the lead 14-13 with 2:18 to go in the first half.

Warren County's lead would not last long. Wilkinson County quickly moved the ball down the field to set up one last score before the half. Whipple ran the quarterback keeper from inside the 10 yard line to put the Warriors back on top. The two point conversion gave Wilkinson a 21-14 lead at the half.

The third quarter was all Wilkinson County as they added two more scores with runs by Whipple. The Devils were unable to match with scores of their own and found themselves trailing by a score of 34-14 at the end of the period.

Neither team would score in the fourth quarter until Jabari Wilson took it into the end zone on a short run with 48 seconds to go. Dextrell Norris ran the two point conversion in for the Devils making the final score 34-22.

Jabari Wilson led all rushers in the game with 116 yards with 1 touchdown on 18 carries. Dextrell Norris had 79 yards on 9 carries and Devarius Davis carried the ball 7 times for 18 yards and 1 touchdown. Davis also had 2 completions for 31 yards. Ed'Ricus had 1 completion for 23 yards and Norris added 1 completion for 11 yards.

The loss means that Warren County will now need a win against Aquinas Friday night coupled with a loss by Washington-Wilkes to Twiggs County in order to make the playoffs. Twiggs County enters the week winless for the 2011 season. Warren County will host Aquinas at Albert J. Massey Field for the last game of the regular season.

Devils Lose on Homecoming to Washington-Wilkes 34-13

Warren County limped into Albert J. Massey Field with their top ranked defense missing several key players to take on Washington-Wilkes. The Devils left the field with only their second loss of the season after surrendering more points in one night than they had given up the entire season combined. Warren County head coach David Daniel, watched from the press box Friday night as his team searched for an answer to the Tiger air assault.

Injuries plagued Warren County for the first time this year. Daniel Spence, a senior defensive starter and scholar athlete award winner did not suit up Friday night for the Devils after suffering a concussion following the Hancock Central game. Junior defensive end, Deondre Battle, was also missing Friday night due to a broken toe. Jeffery Gillyard managed to suit up to take his position on the defensive line after having his badly swollen ankle taped, but was ineffective and his night was quickly done as he had to limp off the field to the sideline.

The Screaming Devils jumped out to an early lead after Ed'Ricus Williams recovered a fumble and went 46 yards for the touchdown. Williams extra point attempt was good giving Warren County a 7-0 lead before their offense even took the field.

The Tigers would answer with a long touchdown strike on their next possession. Quarterback Buck Robinson connected with a Tiger receiver 60 yards downfield to narrow the score. After the missed extra point, Warren County held a slim 7-6 lead.

The Devils would add to the lead in their next possession. Warren County's Jabari Wilson took a handoff from quarterback Damien Clark, found a hole in the line and took it 54 yards down the far sideline for a touchdown. William's extra point was blocked and Warren County led 13-6.

Washington-Wilkes again answered quickly as they marched down the field to set up a 15 yard touchdown pass to the corner of the end zone to again narrow the Warren County lead. After a successful extra point attempt, the Devils again held a 1 point lead with 1:04 to go in the first quarter.

The lead would be the last of the night for Warren County. The Devils were never able to get their offense going in the second quarter. Washington-Wilkes would score 3 more times before the end of the first half with a 26 yard run for a touchdown and passes of 22 and 20 yards, both for touchdowns. The Devils went to the locker room down 34-13 searching for an answer to the Tiger passing attack.

Half-time was marked with the crowning of Warren County's Homecoming King and Queen. Shaveria Hall was crowned Homecoming Queen while Jabari Wilson took the crown as King.

The second half was a stark contrast to the first as neither team managed to put points on the board.

Warren County managed only 158 yards of total offense for the night. The Devils rushed for a season low of only 69 yards and were led on the ground by Jabari Wilson with 80 yards on 9 carries. Warren County had 4 players with negative yards on the ground. Damien Clark was 7-15 through the air for another 88 yards. Clark connected twice to Williams for a total of 36 yards, and twice to Dextrell Norris for a total of 22 yards. Wilson also had a 20 yard reception and Devarius Davis added 2 receptions for 8 yards.

The loss makes this week's home game at Albert J. Massey Field against the Warriors of Wilkinson County an almost must win for Warren County if they hope to make the playoffs.

WCHS Homecoming Court Announced

Warren County is proud to announce the candidates for Homecoming king and queen for 2011. Six ladies and six gentlemen have been chosen to the court and the king and queen will be voted on this week by the student body.

Briuana Franklin

Briuana Franklin: Miss Briuana Shynece Franklin is the daughter of Fredda Bradshaw and Bernice Bradshaw Neal. Miss Franklin serves as the captain of the cheerleading squad, a basketball team manager, and a member of FFA, 4-H, and the Key Club. Briuana's interests include shopping and spending time with family and friends. Her future plans include attending Clayton State where she intends to become a medical assistant. Miss Neal's favorite quote is, "If the Lord is with me, who can be against me."

Shaveria Hall

Shaveria Hall: Miss Shaveria Anquoinetta Hall is the lovely daughter of Debra Wilson. She is a member of FFA,4-H, ETS, and has played on the softball team. After graduating from high school, she plans to attend West Georgia to major in nursing and become an RN. Her motto is “The way is not the sky but in the heart.”

Koresca Wilson

Koresca Wilson: Koresca is the daughter of Quoriodus Burnett and Kowinski Wilson and the god daughter of Anita and Eddie Sturgis. She is a member of the class of 2013. After graduating from high school she plans to attend college to pursue a degree in dentistry. Her motto is “believing is seeing.” Miss Wilson enjoys spending her extra time with her loved ones. Koresca Wilson is a bright girl who always gives her best in everything that she is involved in. Miss Wilson is an active participate in the school band and ETS programs.

Sakesia Yarbraugh: Sakesia Quanisha Yarbrough is the lovely daughter of Rachelle Hayman and Henry Yarbrough. She is a member of the cheerleading squad, band, FFA, track, and key club. After graduating from high school, she plans to attend college and major in biology. Miss Yarbraugh enjoys singing, talking, shopping, and hanging out with family and friends and her favorite saying is, "Don’t bring others down because of your lack of happiness."

Brionna Johnson

Brionna Johnson: Miss Brionna Alexus Johnson is 15 yrs. of age, and currently a sophomore attending Warren County High School. Miss Johnson is the lovely daughter of Maurice and Jackie Johnson. She is a member of FFA, the girls JV basketball team, track, and softball. Upon graduating from high school, Brionna’s future plans are to enter the medical profession and to become a radiologist, physical therapist, or a speech therapist. Her motto is: “To understand everything is to forgive everything”.

Kemisha Cowins

Kemisha Cowins: Miss Kemisha Nicole Cowins is 15 yrs of age, and currently a sophomore attending Warren County High School. Miss Cowins is the beautiful daughter of Annie Kate Cowins. She is a member of FFA. Kemisha’s future plans are to graduate from high school, attend college, and make her mother proud. Her motto is:”You can accomplish anything as long you put your mind to it”.

Ed'Ricus Williams: Ed’Ricus Jermaine Williams is the charming son of Vera Williams and Curtis Williams, Sr. He’s a 17 year old senior in the class of 2012. He is a member the football, basketball, track, and baseball teams. He’s also active in 4-H, FFA, FCA, Soccer Club, and Salsa Club. His hobbies include playing sports and playing drums at church. His future plans include attending college on an athletic scholarship to play colligate football, basketball, or track, He plans to major in mass communications with a minor in music. His motto is “If God is with you, who can be against you?”

Jabari Wilson

Jabari Wilson: Jabari Wilson is the son of Valerie Moss and Alfonso Moss. He’s an 18 year old senior in the class of 2012. Jabari a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. His hobbies include talking on the phone and watching ESPN and other sports channels. His future plans include playing football or enlisting in the navy. His motto is “Change your thoughts and change your world."

Cortez Wentz: Cortez Anthony Wentz is the son of Linda and Cortez Wentz. He is a member of the football team and the baseball team. After graduating from high school, he plans to attend college on a football scholarship and major in physical therapy. Cortez enjoys playing with his brothers, listening to music, and watching sports on TV with his father. His favorite quote is, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you are absolutely right."

Brantavius Beausejour: Brantavius Beausejour is the son of Mrs. Betty Beausejour. His favorite hobby is rapping. He is a member of the WCHS Football Team, Screaming Devils Band and FFA. He is currently a sophomore and has made up his mind to join the United States Air Force after graduating from high school.

Jonathan Hall

Jonathan Hall: Jonathan Hall is the son of Mr. Emmet Hall Sr. and Mrs. Erica Hall. Jonathan is a sophomore who enjoys talking on the phone and playing video games, he is also a member of FFA. After graduating and attending college his goal is to become a game developer. His motto is, "Great hope makes great men."

Warren County escaped Sparta with a 21-2 victory Friday night in what proved to be a shaky game for the Devils coming off the bye week. The Screaming Devils improved their record to 6-1 for the season, relying on the strength of their defense as they have done all season.

Neither team was able to sustain an offensive drive past their opponents 30 yard line through the entire 1st quarter resulting in a 0-0 tie at the end of the period. Each of Warren County's drives were halted by fumbles while their defense managed to stall the Bulldog's offensive threats by holding them on fourth down.

The Devil's defense posted the only points in the first half portion of the contest. Richard Wilburn intercepted a pass from Bulldog quarterback, Dontavious Lowe with 6:32 to go in the 2nd quarter. Wilburn returned the interception 34 yards for a touchdown to give Warren County a 6-0 lead. Ed'Ricus Williams came on to kick the extra point and split the uprights for what appeared to be an extra point. However, Hancock was penalized for being offsides and Coach Daniel decided to roll the dice and go for the two point conversion. Damien Clark ran the quarterback sneak and just made it over the goal line to give the Devils an 8-0 lead.

Warren County's offense found it's stride in the third quarter after the Devil's defense held the Bulldog's again on 4th down. Warren County took over on downs on their own 31 yard line with a little over 9:00 to go in the period. The Screaming Devils mounted their longest sustained drive of the game as they went 69 yards in about 6 minutes to set up a 5 yard run for a touchdown by Damien Clark.

The Devils would thwart yet another scoring opportunity by the Bulldogs early in the 4th quarter when they again held Hancock on downs inside the Warren County 5 yard line. The Bulldogs would put their only points of the night on the board three plays later when a bad snap led to a safety making the score 14-2 with 9:50 to go in the game.

Warren County capped off the scoring for the night when Damien Clark connected with Dextrell Norris for a 42 yard pass for a touchdown with 6:44 to go in the game. The extra point by Williams was good to make the final score 21-2.

Warren County rushed for a combined 220 yards on the night. Dextrell Norris led the rushing for Warren County with 54 yards on 7 carries. Jabari Wilson rushed for 43 yards on 13 carries. Devarius Davis carried the ball 7 times for 37 yards and Damien Clark added 34 yards on 9 carries.

The Devils were 3 for 7 through the air with no interceptions. Damien Clark was 3-5 and Richard Wilburn was 0-2. Clark connected with Ed'Ricus Williams for a 9 yard completion, Jabari Wilson for 17 yards, and 42 yard touchdown pass to Dextrell Norris.

Warren County will be at home for the rest of the season. Friday night's game against the Tigers of Washington-Wilkes will be Homecoming for the Devils. Warren County can guarantee a trip to the playoffs with a win Friday night over the Tigers as well.

Devil's Weight Room Gets Face Lift

Christmas came early for the Screaming Devils this year. Warren County students returned to school Wednesday morning to find totally new weight equipment where their old weights had been just one day earlier.

A big part of Warren County's success on the football field the past few years can be attributed to an increased emphasis on weight lifting. One of the first things Coach Lee Hutto did when he came to Warren County was to transform a classroom into a weight room. The weight room had previously been housed in the cramped equipment room located in the gym. While a noticable improvement, the weight room still consisted of old and dated equipment.

One of Dr. Preston's main goals for the athletic department this year was the upgrading of the weight room and the weight equipment. Progress was made with the installation of four new weight racks that accomodate two stations each. The new equipment takes up much less room than the old equipment and will allow more athletes to work out at the same time. Future plans call for new dumbbell racks as well as bumper plates for the weights.

Dr. Preston also hopes to expand the weight program beyond the football team to include other sports as well. Two goals for the weight training program are to get more girls involved in lifting weights and to expand the weight lifting program into the middle school in order to better prepare Warren County students for high school athletics.

Warren County Trounces Twiggs

Warren County rebounded with an explosive offensive night against the Cobras of Twiggs County Friday night after the offense was held to a scoreless outing against Lincoln County the week before. The Screaming Devils also put up another impressive performance on defense as they recorded their first shut-out

and ran their record to 5-1 for the season.

The game also saw the addition of a new way for fans to enjoy football Friday night and the Screaming Devils. For the first time, fans could catch all the action, both audio and video, live on the internet. Many fans tuned into the school's website to catch the video broadcast of the game.

Ricardo Jones ignited the scoring for the Devils with a 66 yard run to the end zone with 10:41 to go in the first quarter for the first of 3 Warren County touchdowns in the period. Devarius Davis added a touchdown with a 3 yard run and Richard Wilburn passed for a 42 yard touchdown strike to Jabari Wilson with 2:18 to go in the first quarter. The 2 point conversion by Wilson gave the Screaming Devils a 20-0 lead at the end of the quarter.

Warren County's defense backed the Cobras deep into their own territory at the end of the first quarter. With Twiggs County punting deep in Cobra territory, Warren blocked a punt for their third consecutive week and Ed'Ricus Williams recovered for another Screaming Devil touchdown. Jabari Wilson pinned the Cobras back deep into their own territory on the ensuing kick off and Warren scored again 8 seconds later with a safety to make the score 28-0.

The Devils would score twice more in the first half with a 56 yard run by Wilson and a 9 yard pass from Damien Clarke to Williams. Jacquez Menchaca added a 2 point conversion to give Warren County a 42-0 half-time lead.

Warren County added two more scores in the second half with a 9 yard run by Davis for a touchdown and a 20 yard run by Richard Wilburn. Williams' lone extra point of the night capped the scoring for Warren County at 55-0.

The victory was the third in three consecutive years for the Screaming Devils against Twiggs County and evens the series record at 3-3 between the two teams.

Devarius Davis lead all rushers for Warren County with 77 yards and 2 touchdowns on 8 carries. Jabari Wilson racked up 68 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 3 carries and 1 reception. Ricardo Jones also found the end zone on 1 carry for 66 yards. Dextrell Norris carried the ball 4 time for 29 yards and Jacquez Menchaca had 24 yards on 4 carries. Damien Clarke had 36 yards on 5 carries and was a perfect 4-4 through the air for 61 passing yards. Richard Wilbun also threw for 42 yards with a touchdown pass to Williams.

Warren County will get a much needed rest this week before taking on the Bulldogs of Hancock Central next week.

WCMS Wins Home Opener

The Warren County Middle School Screaming Devils took center stage at Albert J. Massey Field against Glascock County Wednesday afternoon for their first home game of the 2011 season. The Devil's first game of the season against Louisville was cancelled when wheather forced a halt to the game in the 2nd quarter with Warren County down by 8 but threatening to score with the ball at the Louisville 1 yard line.

Warren County jumped to an early lead in the first quarter and never looked back as they defeated the Panthers by the score of 33-6. Leading rushers for Warren County were Timothy Seals, Jakobian Jones, and Jakobian Hart.

Lady Devils Return to Softball Diamond

The Warren County Lady Devils dusted off their gloves to return to the softball field for the first time in three years today against Harlem. For many of the girls, the game marked their first experience playing organized softball. The team was formed when Dr. Preston agreed to serve as the head coach after repeated requests by the girls to restart the softball program.

Even though the scoreboard showed that Harlem won by the score of 13-0 in 4 innings, the inexperienced Lady Devils team remained positive. While posing for a picture after the game, someone asked the players why they were holding up a finger and chanting, "We're number 1" when they had just lost the game. One of the players responded, "We didn't lose. We were winners when we simply took the field!"

There's not much more you can say about that kind of attitude.

Devils Fall Short In Defensive Battle

The Screaming Devil's attempt at an undefeated season was halted by the Red Devils of Lincoln County once again for the 37th time in 40 years. This year's contest proved to be a bruising defensive battle for both teams as both teams were kept out of the end zone on offense except for a lone Lincoln County touchdown late in the third quarter.

Warren County received the opening kick-off and discovered very quickly that they were going to have a tough time getting their high scoring offense clicking against the Red Devils. Lincoln held the Screaming Devils on 3 consecutive plays and forced Ed'Ricus Williams to punt it away for the first of what would total 6 punts for the night for Warren County.

Lincoln County looked as if they had Warren's defense figured out in their opening possession. Led by quarterback Denzel Gunby, the Red Devils drove the ball deep into Warren County territory. Facing a first and goal from the 10 yard line, the Screaming Devils dug in as they have all season and forced Lincoln County to settle for a 31 yard field goal from James Spratlin with 6:35 to go in the first quarter.

The momentum of the ball game seemed to shift in the second quarter after Warren County held the Red Devils on fourth and goal from the Warren County 4 yard line. After converting for a first down on third and 11 from their own 3, the Screaming Devils mounted their first offensive charge of the ball game before stalling on the Lincoln County 30 yard line. Williams punted it away for Warren County and reversed the field position battle as he pinned Lincoln County deep in their own territory at the 5 yard line.

The Screaming Devils would get another excellent opportunity to score in the second quarter just a few plays later when Richard Wilburn would intercept a pass from Gunby at the Lincoln County 32 yard line. Warren County was unable to capitalize however, and the first half ended with the Red Devils holding a narrow 3 point lead.

Lincoln County began the second half on offense and Warren County's defense again rose to the task and forced Lincoln to punt after giving up only 1 first down to the Red Devils. With the Red Devils punting from about their own 25 yard line, Warren County's special teams came in to give the Screaming Devils their only score of the night with a blocked punt. Daniel Spence recovered the football and took it into the end zone for his second blocked punt recovery for a touchdown in two weeks. Ed'Ricus Williams added the extra point to make it 7-3 and give Warren County the lead with 8:18 to go in the third quarter.

The lead would last only about 7 minutes. Lincoln County mounted their longest and best offensive drive of the night as the Screaming Devil defense fought desperately to hang on to the lead. The Red Devils drove the ball down to the Warren County 5 yard line and Craig Jones took it in from there for Lincoln County's final score of the night to make it 10-7.

Warren County would have their chances in the fourth quarter as the defense once again came up with an interception and held the Red Devil offense at bay. The Screaming Devils were just as ineffective on offense as Lincoln County however.

Jabari Wilson led the Devils in rushing with 61 yard on 16 carries. Damien Clarke added 18 yards on 13 carries and Devarius Davis was held to only 15 yards on 4 carries.

Warren County will look to get back to their winning ways next week when they play host to the Cobras of Twiggs County at Albert J. Massey Field.

Chasing a Dream

If there is a ball bouncing, he is there. If there is a hoop to shoot on, he's shooting. If there is a game going on, he is either playing or trying to get next. A certified “basketball junkie”, Stanley Johnson's heartbeat carries the sound of a leather ball hitting a hardwood floor.

After spending his freshman and sophomore seasons as a reserve, Stanley began to come into his own during the summer just before his Junior year in 2008. For the first time, he committed himself to working out and not just playing to get better. During that summer you could routinely find him in the weight room lifting and in the gym shooting. His efforts quickly began to yield results as he participated in the Florida State Individual Skills Camp and was named Camp MVP. Stanley carried the confidence he gained over the summer into the season. With a new coach combined with the graduation of a number of key players, much wasn't expected from the 2008-09 Screaming Devils. Behind the strong play of Stanley the team finished the regular season with a conference record of 7-2 and had an upset victory over Twiggs County to send them to yet another appearance in the State Playoffs. Stanley averaged 18.6 points per game, and 6.4 rebounds. His consistent performance led to him being named Team MVP and CSRA Honorable Mention.

Stanley's senior year began with yet another coaching change, his third in his four years of wearing a Screaming Devils uniform. Although the change was in house (the previous season's assistant became the head coach), adjusting to a new head coach takes some time. The Devil's sputtered to begin the season losing four of its first six games. They rallied and with Johnson leading the way, they won the nine out of twelve games. Two of the loses were by a combined six points and included a 64-60 loss to the AA State Semifinalist Laney Wildcats. On their way to a solid season, Stanley averaged 16 points and 7 rebounds per game. He was named to the All Tournament Team at the Evans Riboli Christmas Tournament and again a CSRA Honorable Mention.

Two consecutive seasons of solid play drew the interest of a few small college programs. . Despite his on court success, there was an issue; the Georgia High School Writing Test. Having earned enough credits to graduate and scoring well enough on the ACT to accept a college scholarship, not passing the GHSWT prevented both of these. Stanley fully understood the ramifications of not passing the test so he worked hard, getting extra help and preparing for his final opportunity to satisfy this requirement to graduate and continue his athletic and academic career. He accepted a scholarship to Luraleen B. Wallace Community College in Andalusia, Alabama contingent on his final academic standing. He began to search for alternative methods that would allow him to move from high school to college. Those alternatives were; enrolling in a private school over the summer as other students had done prior to him and also submitting a waiver to the Georgia Department of Education. Both of these scenarios came into play when Stanley, on his final attempt, again failed to pass the writing test. Devastated that after thirteen years of schooling he would not have the opportunity to participate in his class graduation, Stanley began to prepare himself for his next step. He submitted the paperwork to enroll into Faith Academy in Atlanta, Georgia and also completed the process to receive a waiver. As graduation approached and passed, Stanley was all set to head to class for the summer. Just prior to classes beginning, he received a letter from the Georgia Department of Education. The letter informed him that he had been granted the waiver and could receive his high school diploma.

Officially a high school graduate, Stanley could now pursue his life long dream of continuing his athletic and academic career. He enrolled at LBW Community College and began to do what came natural with a little something added. He continued to work hard in the gym but he began to put forth more effort in the classroom also. As a freshman Stanley saw limited action on the court. As a student, he saw great improvements in the classroom ending his freshman year with a 3.0 grade point average. Although his playing time was limited, his skill set caught the attention of the coaches at Voorhees College in Denmark, South Carolina. Wanting to be pushed and taught more (LBW had only one full time coach on staff) Stanley decided to transfer.

What happens from here is yet to be seen. If things hold true, there are a few situations we can be sure of. One; because of his love and passion for the game, Voorhees coaches will have a hard time keeping Stanley out of the gym. And two; he will not let himself be put at the mercy of academic standards as he continues to work towards his degree in Criminal Justice.

Devil's Defense Dominates Against Chiefs

While Warren County's offensive has been putting up impressive numbers this season, the Devil defense gives credence to the old saying that defense wins championships. The Screaming Devils had only given up 16 points in three games and turned in their most impressive showing Friday night by holding the McCormick Chiefs scoreless in a 48-0 victory at Albert J. Massey Field.

Warren County's first score of the night came when the Devil defense held the Chiefs on three straight plays and forced them to punt from their own endzone. Ed'Ricus Williams came from the outside untouched for the blocked punt and Warren County was awarded a safety after the ball went through the back of the endzone for a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs then kicked off to the Devils and despite trying to keep the ball out of the hands of Jabari Wilson on the opening kick-off, Wilson managed to field this kick at the Warren County 37 yard line. Wilson returned the kick 63 yards for the Devil's second score of the night to give Warren County an 8-0 lead.

The Devil defense would once again hold the Chiefs on their second possession and give Warren County's offense excellent field position to set up yet another scoring opportunity in the first quarter for the Devils. Devarius Davis ran the ball down to the McCormick 1 yard line to set up a short touchdown run for Wilson on the next play to extend the lead for Warren County.

Warren County would score 4 times in the second quarter. Wilson found the endzone twice on runs of 5 yards and 4 yards for touchdowns. Wilson would also complete a 65 yard pass to Williams for a touchdown on a busted play when a bad snap forced Wilson to improvise. "I was just going to scramble and try to get a few yards when I looked up and saw Ed standing in the middle of the field all alone," stated Wilson.

Ricardo Jones cemented his best performance of the season with a 48 yard run for a touchdown with 2:47 to go in the second quarter. The touchdown by Jones gave the Devils a 41-0 lead going into half-time.

With over a 40 point lead after the first half of the game, the second half was played with a running clock mostly by Warren County's J.V. squad. The Devils would score once more when Daniel Spence recovered a blocked punt at the end of the third quarter for a touchdown. The extra point by Williams gave Warren County a 48-0 lead.

The Devil defense gave Warren County a short field to operate on for much of the night, leading to low rushing totals for the Devil running game. Ricardo Jones led all rushers for the night with 73 yards on only 4 carries. Jabari Wilson rushed for 58 yards on 9 carries with 3 rushing touchdowns. Devarius Davis also rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries and Jacquez Menchaca added 14 yards on 4 carries. Ed'Ricus Williams led the receiving for Warren County with 1 reception for 65 yards. Dextrell Norris also had 2 receptions for 15 yards.

The victory improved Warren County to 4-0 for the season for the first time since 1989 and sets up a big region show down against the Red Devils of Lincoln County next week. The Red Devils are also 4-0 after defeating Greenbrier by a score of 43-13 Friday night. Warren County's last victory over the Red Devils came in 1971. Larry Campbell took charge as the head coach for Lincoln County in 1972 and is undefeated in 36 games against the Screaming Devils. This year's meeting between the Devils will be played at Buddy Bufford Field in Lincolnton. Game time is set for 7:30.

Wilson Named CSRA Player of the Week

Jabari Wilson has been named Player of the Week for the CSRA. Wilson received the honor for his contributions towards the Screaming Devils' 12-3 victory over the Bulldogs of George Walton Academy. The contest saw Wilson score on an 80 yard rush for the first points of the contest as well as score on a 99 yard fumble recovery for a touchdown to seal the win.

Burley Develops As a Player and Transforms As a Person

When you see him in action you think, "Wow! He's long, athletic, and can really jump." If you met him you would probably think, "Wow! He's quiet, reserved, and really shy." Both of those observations would be absolutely correct... if it was 2008 and Travis Burley had not yet graduated from Warren County High School.

Imagine a 6'4" monster of an athlete who could catch a lob pass above the square or could run a fade route and catch a touchdown pass over multiple defenders. As a basketball player, Travis controlled the paint for the Devils. he averaged a double double during both his junior and senior seasons on the court and added five blocks per game. He was instant excitement. You could be sure that when he played you were going to see something amazing, whether it was a thundering dunk or Travis tossing an opponents shot into the stands.

Burley was equally exciting as a football player. During his senior year, Travis racked up 641 yards and 8 touchdowns on just 28 receptions. None was more important than the game winning reception to put the Devils up 34-21 over Wilkinson County with only seconds left on the clock in the first game ever played at Albert J. Massey field. Burley also had an 80 yard reception late in the 3rd quarter to briefly put the Devils up 17-13 over ECI in the playoffs. ECI would go on to win the state championship that year.

Now imagine a 6'4" child who could be in a room for hours and go unnoticed. As a student, Travis was very unassuming. He never spoke unless spoken to and even then it was nothing more than what was warranted. "How was your weekend Travis?" You'd be shocked to get anything more than, "Good" or "Okay." Eye contact was very minimal, hand shakes were less than firm, and body language led you to believe that this young man had a lot of insecurities. But what was it that caused him to be this way? He was popular among the students, had plenty of friends, and was admired by many for his athletic ability. Was it the fact that he came from a single parent home where he was the oldest male in the house? Was it that he wasn't always up on the latest fashion trends? Whatever it was, it all seemed to go away when he signed a letter of intent to play football at Garden City Community College in Garden City, Kansas.

Stepping onto the campus at Garden City, Travis believed that he would be fighting for a starting position at either receiver or free safety. Burley's plans changed when he was forced out of action for a while due to an injury. During his time off from football, Travis would venture into the gym and play pickup with the basketball team. He would eventually catch the eye of an assistant coach (you would too if you dunked on the 6'9" starting center) and the word quickly got back to the head coach. After evaluating his ability, the coaches sat with Travis and explained to him that he was the missing piece to their program's success. Needless to say, he never touched the football field while at Garden City. Over the next two seasons, Travis helped lead the Broncos to back to back NJCAA tournaments.

While the 6'4" monster of an athlete got bigger, faster and stronger, the 6'4" child was beginning to mature and develop into a young man. Going from the comfy confines of Warrenton, Georgia to the unchartered land of Garden City, Kansas forced Travis to grow as a person. As he says, "Going to Kansas helped me come out of my shell. I had to talk and meet new people. If I didn't, I wouldn't have any friends. It helped me to be more open about things." The transition was very noticeable when he came home for a visit after his first year there. You could just tell that his personal confidence had grown. You were getting firm handshakes, eye contact, and more than just those one or two word responses to questions.

After two seasons at GCCC, Travis graduated with his Associates Degree in Economics and enrolled in jamestown College in North Dakota on a basketball scholarship. As his personal growth continued to improve, so did his game. During his junior season, Travis averaged 14 points and 9 rebounds to lead the Jimmies to a 21-9 record. He recorded 11 double doubles and brought the type of excitement to the Jimmies Gym as he did to the Screaming Devils Den. He was voted Dakota Athletic Conference Player of the Week for his back to back double doubles in the DAC Tournament where he averaged 17 points and 14.5 rebounds in 2 games. Burley was also named to the All Conference 2nd team and was chosen as the Newcomer of The Year.

For all of his athletic achievements, his most important achievements have come as a person. Many of his former coaches, teachers, and friends have noticed a change in Travis. No longer is he just the quiet, shy, and reserved guy many from Warrenton are used to seeing. Now he is the cool, calm, charismatic young man that has become a first of his kind in his household; first high school graduate, first scholarship recipient, first to obtain a secondary degree, and the first to change the stars for his family. He's made his mother proud. She always encouraged him to not give up and to keep his head high even when things seemed to be at their worst. With a future filled with possibilities, things could not be better for Travis. A future coach, Travis has another year of basketball remaining and hopes to pursue his graduate degree as he plays a year of football for the Jimmies after this season.

Devils Survive Late Charge by GWA

Warren County traveled to Monroe, GA Friday to take on the George Walton Academy Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are in their second season in the GHSA after going to the third round of the state playoffs last year. George Walton won a GISA state championship in 2009. The game figured to be a defensive between the two teams as both schools returned most every player on the defensive side of the ball.

George Walton won the toss and elected to kick off to start the game giving the Devils the first chance on offense. Warren County looked as if they would have an easy time with the Bulldog's defense after a big run by Jabari Wilson got the Devils into Bulldog territory at the 34 yard line. The Bulldog's defense dug in however and Warren County would turn the ball over on downs.

Both teams would trade possesions throughout the first quarter with neither team being able to advance the ball offensively. After the Bulldogs managed to advance the ball deep inside Warren County territory, a failed 39 yard field goal attempt gave Warren County the ball on the 20 yard line. Jabari Wilson scored on the very next play, going 80 yards for the only points of the first half for Warren County.

George Walton made all the right offensive adjustments in the locker room at the half and seemed to have Warren County's defense figured out. The Bulldogs began to control the football in the second half and kept the Devils' defense on the field for much of the rest of the game. Warren County's defense proved to be impenetrable in the red zone however. The Bulldogs marched the ball inside the ten yard line 3 times in the second half yet were only able to manage 3 points for their efforts. George Walton's offense ate time off the clock and their defense limited the the Devils to only 9 offensive plays in the second half.

Warren County's biggest defensive stand came in the final three minutes of the game with the Bulldog's threatening to take the narrow lead that the Devils had held for most of the contest. Senior, Justin Sperin took a pitch from quarterback, Hunter Rice. Sperin ran around the right side and looked as if he might score until he was hit hard at the one yard line and coughed up the ball. Wilson recovered the fumble and streaked down the far side line 99 yards to make the score 12-3, clinching the win for the Devils.

Jabari Wilson led the rushing for the Devils for the third week with 140 yards on 12 carries and accounted for most of the rushing yardage for Warren County. Devarius Davis rushed for 7 yards on 6 carries. Damien Clarke was 2-4 in passing for the night with both completions made to Wilson.

Dextrell Norris turns the corner for Warren County

The Screaming Devils ran their record to 2-0 with a victory over the Harlem Bulldogs Friday night by the score of 40-6. Warren County continued to work on perfecting their spread offense as five different players found the end zone for the Devils.

It was a frustrating early going for the Devils as a number of penalties stalled the offense for Warren County. The Devils were penalized 13 times for 120 yards with the majority of those penalties coming in the first half.

Warren County struck first when Jabari Wilson found the end zone and after the failed extra point, Warren held a 6-0 lead. Mason McDaniel would tie the game 6-6 for the Bulldogs on a run of his own. The Devils would score once more in the first half. After several penalties drove Warren County back from a 1st and 10 from the Bulldog 14, Jabari Wilson completed a 26 yard pass to Ed'Ricus Williams for a touchdown. The first half scoring would end there and Warren County took a narrow 12-6 lead into the half.

Warren County's offense exploded for 28 points in the second half. Damien Clarke, Devarius Davis, Jacquez Menchaca, and Jabari Wilson all contributed to the scoring for the Devils. The 4th quarter was played by mostly by the Warren County J.V. under a running clock as the Devils held a 40-6 lead at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Warren County rushed for 325 yards for the game and was lead by Jabari Wilson for the 2nd week in a row. Wilson rushed for 154 yards on nine carries and was 1-1 in the passing department for 26 yards through the air. Devarius Davis carried the ball 8 times for 66 yards and one touchdown. Jacquez Menchaca also scored a touchdown on 2 carries for 43 yards.

Warren County hits the road this week to take on George Walton Academy in Monroe for their biggest test so far in the 2011 season. The Devils came up short against the Bulldogs of George Walton last year by the score of 14-6.

Hard Work Pays off for Warren County Graduate

Note: Each week Jaamal Rhodes will be updating you on Warren County athletes who have gone on to excel outside of Warren County. This week, Rhodes shines the spotlight on Quadrez Reese.

He has never been the fastest or the strongest person on the court or the field. His size is not overly impressive, nor is his athletic ability. He has never been the star of any team, yet Quadrez "Disco" Reese has managed to take what he was blessed with and become more than many thought he would. Reese's passion, his dedication, and most importantly his work ethic has allowed him to continue his athletic career and his education well past his days at Warren County High School.

A 2007 graduate of WCHS, Quadrez was a four year member of both the football and basketball teams. Reese also was the starting shortstop on the baseball team his senior year. His love for basketball led him to become the starting point guard during his senior year as well. He led Warren County to the 2nd round of the state tournament where they would eventually fall to the Warriors of Southwest Atlanta Christian. His true passion, however, lay on the gridiron and that is the place where he would leave his mark.

Coach Brian Wallace was Reese's basketball coach in high school. He describes Reese as a "grinder." When asked to describe his dedication, Wallace says, "He may not be the best, but if I have to go to war, Reese is coming with me." He instilled that idea about himself in everyone he's come in contact with. He's always going to work hard, he's always going to compete, and he's always going to make those around him better because he's going to push them just as hard as he pushes himself.

Reese's work ethic helped to turn around Warren County's football program in 2005. During his freshman and sophomore seasons, Warren had won a combined eight football games with only one state playoff appearance that ended with a 35-0 loss to Bremen in 2003. Over his junior and senior seasons, Warren won 16 games including a playoff win over Commerce in 2005 and a trip to the state quarterfinals in 2006.

Although the 2006 season was filled with highlights and special moments, none was more special than the first game of the state playoffs. Warren played host to Bowdon at the Brickyard in Thomson for the first game of the state playoffs. Bowdon had beaten the Devils in the playoffs the previous year. The game was the first time Warren County had hosted a playoff game since 1968. Warren County fans filled the home side of the stadium and Quadrez and the Devils gave the fans their money's worth. Reese rushed for 239 yards and scored three touchdowns on runs of 57, 44, and 33 yards to lead the Devils to a 56-24 victory.

After graduating, Quadrez walked on to one of the top junior college programs in the country at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville. Not one to be satisfied with just being on the team, Quadrez displayed to the coaches of GMC the same work ethic that made him a high school stand out. Reese's hard work earned him a vital role as a special teams player and eventually led to a position as a tailback for the Bulldogs. In his two seasons at GMC, Quadrez helped his teams to a combined 15-6 record and a bowl game appearance.

With no scholarship offers coming his way immediately after his second season at GMC, Reese said he had planned to do what he had always done. According to Reese, "I figured I'd go somewhere, outwork everyone around me, and earn a spot in someones program." Fortunately, someone had other plans. It was one of those hot summer Georgia days and Reese had just wrapped up a day of basketball at the old high school gym in Warren County when he retrieved a voice mail from his cell phone. The message was from the coaching staff at Trinity International University in Deerfield, Illinois and they wanted to offer him a football scholarship as a defensive back. The fact that he had not played the position since he was a freshman in high school did not deter Reese one bit.

Reese responded to the coaches by saying, "Yes sir, I do play cornerback. I would definitely accept your offer. When do I need to be there?" Beginning that day, Quadrez began preparing himself for his new challenge. Reese told himself, "I'm going to be a starter, not just another player." For the next seven weeks he ran, lifted weights, did footwork drills, and flipped tires alone in preparation to join his new team.

On August 28, 2010, Quadrez stepped onto the field for the Trojans in their season opener. Even though he had devoted more time than ever to getting himself better, he was still not the fastest, the strongest, or the most athletic. He was, however, a leader, a captain, and most importantly, a starter. In his first game as a defensive back since his freshman year of high school, Reese intercepted a pass and broke up three others as the Trojans defeated Iowa's Wesleyan College 16-6. He finished the season as one of the top defensive backs on the team.

2011 brings new challenges and expectations for Reese as he has been moved back to his natural position of running back. Reese once again spent the summer training and readying himself for success. Reese sums up his philosophy on success with one of his favorite quotes, "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard." You can be sure that "Disco" Reese will be dancing in the end zone again this year after all of his hard work.

Devils Receive State Recognition

Three Warren County Screaming Devils received state-wide recognition for their efforts on the field Friday night. Jabari Wilson, Devarius Davis, and Noah Lewis were all three mentioned in the "Top Performances" section of the Georgia High School Football Daily.

WCHS and Gurley's IGA is proud to start a new tradition in Warren County football this year. Each week, Gurley's will sponser both an offensive and defensive player of the week. This week Coach Daniel named his entire defensive squad to the honor for holding Glascock to only 7 points and 116 yard of total offense. Jabari Wilson earned the top Devil award on offense for his 215 yard rushing performance. Wilson also completed a 28 yard pass to Ed'Ricus Williams.

The Screaming Devils cruised to victory against the Glascock Panthers Friday night to give Coach David Daniel his first victory as a head football coach. Warren County made the short trip to neighboring Gibson for the annual opening contest in the newly renovated Panther Stadium. the Panthers installed new lights, bleachers, fencing, press box and new sod during the off-season with funds from the local SPLOST.

The game looked to be a defensive battle early in the first quarter as neither team was able to move the ball in their first possessions. Warren County won the toss and elected to receive to start the game. The Devils were unable to pick up a first down and punted the ball away after a strong defensive stance by the Panthers. Glascock did not fare any better on their first possession of the game as the Devils' defense also forced a punt after three offensive plays.

The offensive struggle for Warren County quickly came to an end when Devarius Davis struck for a 35 yard touchdown run to make the score 7-0. The Devils would score twice more in the first half. Jabari Wilson broke a 52-yard run for a touchdown, followed by a 19-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown by Ed'Ricus Williams.

Warren County's veteran defense never allowed the Panthers to get even close to putting points on the board in the first half. The Panthers managed only one first down and finished the first half with only two yards of positive offense. The Devils took a comfortable 35-0 lead into halftime.

Warren County would add three more touchdowns in the second half. Davarius Davis scored twice and Jabari Wilson added one more score of his own. Glascock found the end zone late in the fourth quarter for their only points of the game when Lewis Watkins rushed for a touchdown to make the final score 51-7 and denying the Devils a shutout.

Jabari Wilson led all rushers for the night with 215 yards and three touchdowns on eight carries. Davarius Davis rushed for three touchdowns of his own while racking up 208 yards on six carries. Damien Clarke also scored a rushing touchdown on six carries for 11 yards. Jabari Wilson threw for the only completion of the night, that being a 28 yard pass to Ed'Ricus Williams. Leading rusher for the Panthers was Lewis Watkins with 66 yards on 15 carries.

Warren County will play host to the Harlem Bulldogs Friday night at 7:30.

Screaming Devils Return to Gridiron Against Butler

The Warren County Screaming Devils kicked off the 2011 football season with a scrimmage for the second season in a row against the Butler Bulldogs of Richmond County. Butler returned to A.J. Massey Field with essentially the same team they brought last year and intent to prove that their last season record of 7-3 was no fluke. The Devils enter the 2011 season with the task of replacing several key players lost due to graduation, including quarterback, Dondracus Dozier and running back, Coby Reynolds.

The Bulldogs opened the game on offense and looked to be in trouble early after Warren County forced them into a third and long after losses on the first two plays of the game. Butler was able to convert for a first down after a 25 yard run out of the backfield. The first down conversion provided a lift to the Bulldogs as they went on to score on their first possession of the game. The two point conversion gave Butler the lead by a score of 8-0.

It would appear Warren County would answer with a quick score of their own in their first possession after Jabari Wilson struck for an 85 yard running play to the end-zone. The score was quickly negated, however, due to a penalty and the Devils would eventually turn the ball back over to the Bulldogs.

Warren again looked as if they had put points on the board in the second quarter when Wilson reached the end-zone after another long run. Once again, the play was called back due to a penalty. Butler would add two more scores in the first half to take a 22-0 lead into half-time.

After a scoreless 3rd quarter for both teams, the Devils would strike twice in the 4th quarter. Keighron Allen found the end-zone twice to narrow the score to 22-16.

Warren County managed 187 yards on 31 carries for the night while Butler gained 176 yards on 30 carries. Jabari Wilson led all rushers for Warren County with 8 carries for 127 yards. Davarus Davis carried the ball 9 times for 29 yards and Damien Clark rushed for 16 yards from the quarterback position. The Devils were 1-2 through the air with 1 interception. The lone completion came with Keighron Allen at quarterback in the 4th quarter. Allen connected with Antron Gilbert for a 17 yard completion. The Bulldogs accumulated 75 yards through the air and went 6-7 in the passing department.

Warren County will open the regular season next Friday night on the road against the Glascock Panthers. Game time is scheduled for 7:30. All regular season games will once again be delayed broadcast on WTHO 101.7 immediately following the Thomson Bulldog game and can be heard live on www.wtho.com at 7:30.

The Warren County Screaming Devils have taken to the diamond for the fourth consecutive year this spring as they continue to restart the baseball program at Warren County High School. This is Warren County's second consecutive season of high school baseball as they seek to build upon their experience in the middle school. The 2011 Screaming Devils are led by Coach Scott Swann.

Cortez Wentz keeps a Bulldog runner close

Warren County started the season 0-2 with losses to Butler and Hancock Central. Even though the Devils lost their first two, Coach Swann sees improvement in his team. "We basically lost to Butler because we could not throw strikes. A week later, we lost to Hancock because they hit the ball and we made errors. Our pitching is improving. We just have to play better defense."

The Screaming Devils actually led for a brief period in the first inning. Keighron Allen provided some excitment for the Devil fans in attendance when he lined a pitch to left field and then scored on a hit by Randy Paschall. Warren County scored one more when the pitcher threw a wild pitch with Warren County trying to steal home. The Devil's offense dried up after that, however, and Warren County fell to the Bulldogs in three innings.

Next up for Warren County is a rematch with Butler on Thursday, March 10 at Butler. "If we pitch and hit like we did against Hancock and can cut out the errors, I feel we stand a good chance in the second game against Butler," commented Coach Swann. Game time is set for 4:15.

Warthen named one of top guards in the country

Warren County Lady Devil, Candice Warthen, has recently been named one of the top high school basketball guards in the country by ESPN.com. Warthen ranks 26th according to the ESPN rankings. Friday night could see Candice reach another milestone in her high school career. Warthen is only 24 points away from reaching her 2000 high school point. Niya Butts, head coach of Arizona, plans to be present at the game against Thomson to see Candice possibly make Warren County history.

Devils perform well in scrimmage

Warren County basketball coaches got the first look at their teams in action last Saturday night at Glenn Hills High School in Augusta. Both varsity teams competed in Georgia-lina Preseason Classic. Over 20 girl's teams and 20 boy's teams used the opportunity to get in one of their first games of the season.

The WCHS Lady Devils drew one of the toughest games of the event and were matched up with the Orangeburg-Wilkinson Bears. The Bears were the South Carolina AAAAA state runner-ups in 2009.

The Lady Devils got off to a fast start and jumped out to an early lead due to a great job of rebounding. Warren County capitalized on 24 rebounds in the first half by converting for easy scores in transition. The Lady Devils held a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Devils maintained their lead throughout the second quarter and went to the locker room up by the score of 24-17.

The Bears depth proved too much for the Lady Devils in the second half. Orangeburg-Wilkinson substituted five players at a time and were able to keep a fresh team on the court for all of the final two periods. The third quarter ended with the Bears leading 38-32. Warren County kept themselves in a position to win the game, but wound up losing by 4, 50-46.

Candice Warthen led the scoring for Warren County with 34 points, 10 rebounds, and 6 steals. Takeisa Harris contributed with 6 points and 7 steals. Sondrea Hardin had 4 points and 4 steals and Virginia King also had 2 points.

The Warren County boys took the floor next to take on the Spartans from Glenn Hills. The Screaming Devils played well considering the limited number of players that took the court for Warren County. Most all of the players that Coach Stephens expects to form the nucleus of his varsity team played in the state playoff football game the night before. They were not expected to join the basketball team until the following week.

The Screaming Devils kept the game competitive despite their limited squad and lost by only 50-38. Cameron Bolton led the scoring for the Devils with 17 points.

Next up for the Devils will be the Thanksgiving Classic at Washington County High School. The Lady Devils will take on AAAAA Walton County while the boys will be in action against Kell High School.

Warthen commits to Wildcats

The future for one Warren County athlete has been decided. Candice Warthen signed a national letter of intent last week to play with the University of Arizona Wildcats. Warthen made the decision after making an official visit to the school with her mother the previous week.

"I really felt like I just fit in at Arizona after visiting the school," stated Warthen. Another influencing factor was Arizona's head coach Niya Butts. When asked about Coach Butts Warthen commented, "She (Butts) really expressed an interest in me and I felt as though it was about more than basketball."

Coach Butts is excited about Warthen joining the Arizona program. "Candice is going to bring an outstanding ability to score as well as athleticism and quickness to our perimeter and will step in as a point guard at a good time in our program."

A signing ceremony was held in the media center at Warren County High School last Wednesday. Warthen was joined by family, coaches, fellow players, friends, teachers, and media for the celebration. Basketball officially begins with tryouts

While football season still has at least three weeks of games left to play, the day that many Warren County athletes have been looking forward to for months has finally arrived. The doors to the gym were opened wide and the balls were let loose Monday as the Lady Devils and many of the Screaming Devils took to the hard court for the first time. Both teams are under the leadership of new head coaches this year.

The Lady Devils took to the court for their first work out under the leadership of new head coach George Lee. Coach Lee, along with Shontier Barnes (Assistant Principle), served as coach of the Warren County Middle School girl's basketball team last season. Coach Lee leads a Lady Devil loaded with experience and talent. Headlining the Lady Devils will once again be Division 1 recruit, Candice Warthen. Warthen is entering her senior season at Warren County and has already committed to play college ball at Arizona next year. Warthen is also surrounded by a supporting cast of talented and experienced players, including.

Coach Lee will also benefit from the addition of a very talented freshman class. While these new Devils may be young, they are blessed with both speed and size. Tyjah Hill, while only a freshman, will be one of the taller players on the team. Tomeka Harris, also a freshman, already possesses exceptional ball handling and shooting skills. Several other players look to make significant contributions to the Lady Devils as well, including sophomore, Tianca Evans. Warthen wasted little time in stepping into the role as leader on the hard court today by helping to instruct some of the newer players on some of the finer points of high school basketball.

The Lady Devils have only a few weeks to get game ready. They play their first game November 14 against the AAAAA South Carolina Champions in a tournament in Augusta.

Coach Terry Stephens takes over the the boy's program this season after Coach Levon Grant left after only one year as the head coach of the Screaming Devils. Coach Grant is now the head coach of Howard High School in Macon. Coach Stephens held his first practice without a number of players that figure to play a key role in this year's team due to the ongoing football season.

Coach Stephens began his first practice by addressing his players and laying out his expectations. "We are not blessed with height," stated Stephens. He went on to lay out his strategy for the season by saying, "We'll have to overcome our lack of height by using our quickness and hustle to beat our opponents on defense." Coach Stephens let it be known that he would be more impressed by a player that got the job done on defense than by one who simply scored a lot of points. Stephens told his players, "We lose by 5 if you as an individual score 40 points in a night but give up 45."

The Screaming Devils also return some quality players to the court this season. Stanley Johnson, a senior, looks to headline a returning cast of Devils that includes the likes of Jacquez Moss, Greg Howard, Dondracus Dozier, Corneilus Pinkston, Dominique Menchaca, Darius Jenkins, and Tay Erwin. A supporting cast that includes Uriah Myrick, Cameron Bolton, Desmand Ficklin, Steve Burley, Ed' Ricus Williams , Michael Scott, and others look to round out the Screaming Devil roster this season.

Devils secure playoff spot with victory

The fighting Irish of Aquinas came into Albert J. Massey Field looking to spoil the homecoming festivities for Warren County. A lot was on the line for both teams Friday night. At stake for the team that won was a trip to the playoffs. The loser would be done after the end of the regular season. Warren County proved they wanted it more with a thrilling 20-14 come-from-behind win over the Irish.

The game started slowly for both teams in the first quarter. Neither team was able to mount much of an offensive attack and the first quarter ended with no score being posted by either team.

Warren County finally managed to put points on the board at the end of the second quarter. Tay Erwin connected with Darius Jenkins for a 12 yard touchdown strike with less than 20 seconds to go in the first half. After the failed two point conversion, the Screaming Devils took a slim 6-0 lead into the locker room at the half.

Aquinas took the kick-off to start the third quarter. Four plays later, David Mysona scored on a 50 yard run to give the Irish their first points of the game. Seconds later, the Irish kicked the extra point to lead 7-6.

Warren County would answer with a twelve play drive that culminated with a 14 yard run by Dondracus Dozier for a touchdown. Warren County would fail to convert on the two-point conversion, giving them the lead by a score of 12-7.

Aquinas would score again on their next possession when Anderson completed a 25 yard touchdown pass to Collins. The extra point gave the Irish a 14-12 lead with 11:53 to go in the fourth quarter.

After holding Warren County, the Irish put themselves in position to take control of the game when Ed' Ricus Williams failed to get the punt off giving Aquinas the ball on the Warren County 14 yard line. Warren County's defense held and first year Irish head coach, Matt Lezotte, was faced with a tough decision. Aquinas had the opportunity to add to their lead with 8:12 to go in the 4th by kicking a field goal, but decided to go for it on fourth down instead. Warren County's defense held and the Devils took over the football on the 10 yard line.

Warren County began to methodically march down the field and looked to be on the way to re-taking the lead until Coby Reynolds fumbled the ball on the Aquinas 22 yard line. The Irish recovered and the hopes of many Warren County fans began to fade.

Warren County's defense once again answered the call and forced the Irish to punt. After a booming punt by the Irish punter, the Devils took over on their own 16 yard line.

Quarterback Dondracus Dozier then began to engineer a drive that reminded many of the last minute, game winning drive against Wilkinson County two years ago. With less than 40 seconds to go, Dozier connected with receiver, Cornelius Pinkston for a 55 yard touchdown pass and the victory.

The win places added importance to this week's game against the Tigers of Washington-Wilkes. The game against the Tigers will be the first meeting of the two teams since Lee Hutto, former Warren County head coach, took over the Washington-Wilkes program. The game will also be a must win for both teams if they are to finish higher than the number four seed in the state playoffs. Both teams enter the game with a 4-4 record.

Coach Marleau Blount, new head coach for Warren County, got a first hand look at what to expect from the Screaming Devils this year as they look on the Trojans of Johnson County at home Friday night. The game marked the end of the preseason workouts for the team and gave both teams the opportunity to run through their playbook in a real game setting.

Warren County and Johnson County met last year in the preseason at Johnson County. The Trojans came into Warren County with a team filled with starters from last year’s 9-2 season. Warren County entered the game hoping to improve upon last year’s performance against the Trojans while getting a look at what to expect from a still young Screaming Devil team.

The game started with the Screaming Devils kicking off the ball to Johnson County. Johnson County QB, D. J. Rozier, came out throwing early and completing passes often to set up the Trojans first score. Taurus Mosley ran for 2 yards and the TD to give the Trojans an early lead 7-0 lead with 8:54 left to go in the 1st quarter.

The Screaming Devils first drive showed that they were still a run oriented team. Coby Reynolds got the first 4 carries for 17 yards. The Devils drive was cut short with an incomplete pass from Dozier on 4th down, giving up the ball on downs at the Trojans 43 yard line.

The Trojans kept up the pressure. They scored on their next possession with a run from Rozier for 18 yards, with 1:46 left in the 1st quarter. Giving the Trojans a 14-0 lead.

The Devils scored on their third possession with a 1 yard run from Coby Reynolds. The extra point attempt by Alonzo Benton was no good.

Darius Jenkins cut Johnson County’s third possession short with an interception. That led to a 19 yard TD run by Dozier with 15.3 seconds left in the 1st half. The Devils once again failed to convert the extra point leaving the Devils trailing by the score of 14-12.

The Devils momentum was quickly taken away in the 3rd quarter with a safety from the Trojans defense. Johnson County scored on 2 of their last 3 possession with a run by Larry Taylor and Bull Darrisaw on an 18 yard run and a 4 yard run. The game was called at 8:30 due to time constraints.

“We saw some positive things in the game and found some things we need to work harder on. We did a good job of getting to the ball, but we simply didn’t wrap up when we got there,” commented Coach Blount. He attributes that to the face that the Devils are still a somewhat young team. Warren County once again fields a team with few senior leaders.

One key difference for the Devils this season is an expanded roster. Coach Blount stated, “We’ve got almost 40 players available on the sidelines this year. It helps not to have to play everybody both ways.” Coach Blount will still be forced to play some of his key players both ways however. Coach Blount continued, “It’s just a fact of Class A football that some of your guys have to play both ways. We just hope our guys don’t have to do it the entire game this year.”

The coaches for Warren County will be busy preparing for their first regular season game of the year to be played this Friday night against the Panthers of Glascock County. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Devils Capture Boy's State Track Championship

Kentrell Latimore, a senior on the Warren County track team, said he thought it would take a miracle for the Devils to win the state track meet at the end of the first day of events. Athens Christian Academy held a 32 point lead over second place Our Lady of Mercy. Warren County was a distant 6th and 37.5 points behind after only being able to get 14.5 points in the field events.

Coach Richard Arrington was more optimistic. "I knew by looking at the region times that Athens Christian turned in, our best events were ahead of us", stated Arrington. Coach Arrington's intuition proved correct. The Screaming Devils dominated the track events and came from behind to win the state title over Athens Christian by an 11.5 point margin. Warren County scored 56 points in the track events for a total of 70.5 points.

One key to Warren County's title was the performance of Kentrell Latimore in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles. Latimore was projected to finish 7th or 8th based on the region meet times, but instead finished 3rd. Latimore's 3rd place finish garnered 6 points for the Devils.

The Devils were led by sophomore Coby Reynolds. Reynolds placed first in the 100 meter dash, and the 200 meter dash. Reynolds was also a member of the 1st place 400 meter relay team and the 5th place 1600 meter relay team. Reynolds' efforts earned him 2nd place in the individual competition for the high-point trophy behind Raymond Higgs of Athens Christian.

5th place: Cornelius Pinkston, Coby Reynolds, Ricardo Jones, Kentrell Latimore, Andrew Webb, and Antonio Benton in the 1600 meter relay.

The Warren County Lady Devils begin their quest for a state track title Thursday in Albany, GA. Head coach, Marleau Blount is excited about his team's chances this week. When asked for a prediction, Coach Blount stated, "All we have to do is to keep doing what we've been doing this year and we should finish very high."

Devils Capture Region Track Title

The Screaming Devils raced to the top of Region 4A track with impressive Region Championship victories by both the boy's and girl's teams. This year's region meet was hosted by Washington-Wilkes and held at Laney High School in Augusta, GA.

Warren County recaptured the region title on the boy's side from last year's champions, Wilkinson County. According to head coach, Richard Arrington, "We knew Wilkinson was fast. We just worked hard all season and got better in time for the region meet."

Results for the boys were:

1st Place: Coby Reynolds in the 100 meter dash, & the 200 meter dash; Cornelius Pinkston in the 800 meter run; Kentrell Latimore in the 110 meter high hurdles; Jonathan Lewis in the shotput and the discus; Cornelius Pinkston, Ricardo Jones, Coby Reynolds, and Kentrell Latimore in the 1600 meter relay.

2nd Place: Antonio Benton in the 100 meter dash, the 200 meter dash, and the long jump; Cornelius Pinkston in the 400 meter run; Tay Erwin in the triple jump; Kentrell Latimore, Antonio Benton, Andrew Webb, and Coby Reynolds in the 400 meter relay.

3rd Place: Coby Reynolds in the long jump; Mark Cosby in the discus; Tay Erwin in the high jump; Andrew Webb, Antonio Benton, Steve Burley, and Tay Erwin in the 1600 meter relay.

The Lady Devils track team, coached by Marleau Blount, returned many from last year's region championship team and was heavily favored by many to repeat as champions this year. The Lady Devils easily lived up to everyone's expectations. Coach Blount worked hard all season preparing his team for the region championship. Coach Blount commented, "I am very confident going into the state competition at Hugh Mill Stadium in Albany, GA."

Girl's Results were:

1st Place: Candice Warthen in the long jump, high jump, and 100 meter dash; Lakerria Williams in the triple jump; Tykesia Johnson, Lakerria Williams, Tiandra Harris, and Candice Warthen in the 4x100 meter relay.

2nd Place: Tynisha Harris in the discus; Cedrica Bacon in the shot put; Jashanna Graves in the 1600 meter; Tiandra Harris in the 110 meter hurdles.

3rd Place: Jashanna Graves in the 800 meter; Kelisia Williams in the 110 meter hurdles; Sondrea Hardin, Tianca Evans, Candice Warthen, and Lakerria Williams in the 1600 meter relay.

1st and 2nd place winners will advance to the state competition to be held in May.

Devils post victory in 2nd week of baseball season

The Warren County Middle School Screaming Devils posted a record of 1-1-1 in the second week of the 2009 season. Warren County traveled to Wrens for one game on Tuesday and Louisville for a double header on Thursday.

The Devils looked flat against a very good Wrens squad Tuesday. Warren County gave up 11 runs in the first inning off of five errors and were never really in the game after that. "If we don't make those errors, we get out of the inning without giving up a run", stated Coach Moon. "We've got to start making the easy plays." The Devils fell to Wrens in three innings by a score of 16-1.

The bats came alive for Warren County Thursday against Louisville. The Devils earned their first victory of the season by a score of 18-11. "We really hit the ball", stated Moon. "We've got some guys that have really been working hard and haven't seen much playing time. It was good to be able to get everybody into the game."

The Devils had to come from behind in the second game of the double header after their pitching allowed Louisville and early lead. Once again, Warren County got the job done at the plate to tie the game at 11-11 before darkness forced the game to end.

The Devils' overall record now stands at 1-4-1.

WCHS track season is off and running

The WCHS track team travelled to Tallifero County Thursday for their first track meet of the season. Their first contest of the year was against Tallifero and Washington-Wilkes. The meet offered the Devils the opportunity to stretch their legs for the first time this season against two region opponents and see just what kind of team they have this year.

Both the girl's and boy's teams finished in first place for the meet. There were many individual standouts as well. Individual results were as follows:

Devils swing into baseball

The 2009 baseball season officially got under way for Warren County Middle School Thursday when the Screaming Devils travelled to Glascock to take on the Panthers in a double header. The Devils are in their second season of rebuilding the baseball program at Warren County Middle & High School.

"We had very few 8th graders last year", stated head coach Joey Moon. "This year we return a good many players that got a lot of playing time last season. We still have a pretty steep learning curve, but we should be better this year."

The improvement in this year's team was made clear in the first outing for the Devils this season. The Devils dropped both games in the double header, but there were definite signs of improvement over last season. "We look a lot better at certain key positions", commented assistant coach, Fred Blount. Blount continued by saying, "Robert Burns did an excellent job at catcher, especially for his first game at the position."

Coach Swann was impressed with the development of 2nd baseman, Quartavis Cobb. "Quartavis saw a good deal of playing time last season as a 6th grader and you can tell it payed off."

It was apparent that the Devils had a case of opening day jitters in the first game of the evening. The Devils gave up 6 runs in the first inning off of 2 hits, 3 errors and 3 walks. After working through the first inning, the Devils began to relax and show signs of improvement.

After failing to score in the 2nd inning, the Devils only gave up 3 runs in the 2nd. They had a chance to get out of the inning without giving up a run, but once again 2 costly errors allowed Glascock to extend their lead.

The Devils gave up two more runs on a home run by Moore. Torrez Wentz came in to face the last batter when starting pitcher, Damian Clark, began to labor. Wentz got the only batter he faced to ground out to shortstop with the bases loaded.

Warren County's bats came alive in the second game of the evening. After hitting a solid double in the last inning of the first game, Damian Clark followed it up by going 2 for 2 in the second game with a double and a single. The Devils scored 4 runs in the first inning off of hits by Clark, Cortez Wentz, and Torrez Wentz. Deonte Battle and Antorius Kendrick both drew walks.

The second game remained close with the Devils trailing 6-4 until 2 outs in the third inning. Glascock scored 12 runs with 2 outs to put the game away, 18-4.

"We got better after we got the nerves out of the way", stated Moon. "We've just got some things we still need to work on. We've still got a lot of work to do with our pitchers."

The Devils will travel to Wrens Tuesday to take on the Colts. All of Warren County's games will be played on the road this year due to the condition of the field in Warren County.

Lady Devils fall to ECI

The Warren County Lady Devils took to the court at home against the Lady Bulldogs of Emanuel County Institute in the first round of the state playoffs Friday night. The Devils entered the game as the number two seed out of Region 4 while the Lady Bulldogs were the number three seed from Region 3. Many felt that the two teams were maybe the most equally matched first round opponents in the the playoffs.

The scoring was slow for both teams in the early going. ECI's defense kept pressure on Warren County's guards and prevented the Lady Devils from penetrating the lane. The first quarter ended with ECI on top 10-6.

The second period opened with Warren County scoring quickly. Takesia Harris hit one of her five three point shots on the evening and after a quick defensive rebound, Candice Warthen scored on a fast break to give Warren County the lead by a score of 11-10. It was the Lady Devils' first lead since leading 2-0.

Warren County's lead would be short-lived however. Both teams traded scores through the early minutes of the 2nd period before ECI took control again. The Devils went to the locker room down by 7 with the scoreboard reading ECI 25 and Warren County 18.

The Lady Devils began the 3rd period much the same as they did the 2nd. ECI seemed to focus their defense on Warthen, opening up Harris on the outside. Harris scored her first 3 pointer of the period with 4:40 to go in the 3rd to give Warren County the lead by a score of 27-25.

ECI responded by going on a run of their own to establish a six point lead over the devils. Harris again responded from beyond the arch with two 3 point shots to tie the game at 31-31 with 2:48 to go in the 3rd.

ECI's size advantage began to take a toll on the Lady Devils. The Lady Bulldogs outscored the Devils 12-2 in the final minutes of the third quarter to lead by a score of 43-33.

Warren County was determined not to let their season end without a fight. They once again began to narrow the lead through the three point shots of Harris and the quickness of Warthen. In the end, it would not be enough. ECI squeaked out the victory by a score of 40-48.

Candice Warthen led the scoring for the Devils with 24. Takesia Harris contributed 21 points, 15 of which came from beyond the three point line. Tyneisha Harris contributed with a 3 point shot of her own.

Coach Rhodes commented on his team's performance by saying, "ECI simply did a better job rebounding. We didn't box out and they used their size to their advantage." Rhodes also praised the play of Takesia Harris by saying, "She really stepped up big. You could tell she wanted the ball."

The Lady Devils now begin to work toward next season. They lose only one player to graduation this year and look for several rising freshmen to contribute early. The Lady Devils look to once again be one of the teams to beat in Region 4 next year.

Devils wrap up region play and head to State

The Screaming Devils completed region play Saturday at Hancock Central. Hancock Central played host for the second and third rounds of the Region 4 tournament. The weekend games were used to determine the seeding for the state tournament.

The Lady Devils put on an impressive performance Friday night against the Lady Bulldogs of GMC. Candice Warthen led the Devils to a 49-25 victory while contributing 34 points in the winning effort. The win set up a Saturday meeting with Hancock Central for the region championship. The Bulldogs of Hancock Central handed the Lady Devils their only regular season losses to a class A opponent.

Saturday's meeting between the Lady Devils and Hancock provided plenty excitement from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer. The first quarter ended with both teams tied at 9 points. Warren County took control in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Bulldogs by 10 to take a 27-17 lead into the locker room.

Hancock managed to narrow the Devils' lead in the third period to only 4 points. The 4th period began with Warren leading by the score of 35-31. Warren County's lead would not last as Hancock came from behind in the 4th period to win by a score of 53-47. Candice Warthen led all scorers for Warren County with 32 points.

The boys of Warren County had their hands full Friday night as they took on the Wilkinson County Warriors. The Warriors are a perennial top ranked team in the state. The Devils looked as if they might be able to make a game of it in the early going, but the depth and experience of the Warriors proved to be too much for the Devils to handle. Wilkinson County closed out the victory by the score of 81-41.

The Devils played Aquinas Saturday to decide 3rd and 4th place in the region. The Devils faced the Irish twice in the regular season with Aquinas narrowly coming out on top in both contests. The third meeting of the year between the two teams would yield similar results with Aquinas winning it, 62-55. Leading scorers for Warren County were Stanley Johnson with 22, Tae Erwin with 14, and Dondracus Dozier with 10 points.

The Lady Devils will play host to Emmanuel County Institute Friday, February 27 in the first round of the state playoffs. The boy's team will travel to Savannah Saturday, February 28 to take on Calvary in their first round game. Come out and support the Screaming Devils as they begin the state playoffs.

Devils secure state playoff spot

Both WCHS basketball teams earned a trip to the state playoffs with victories in the first round of the region tournament Tuesday. The number one seed Warren County Lady Devils saw action against the number four seed Lady Warriors of Wilkinson County and the number two seed Screaming Devils took on the number three three seed Cobras of Twiggs County. Warren County hosted both games by virtue of being he higher seeded team in the tournament.

Few expected the Lady Devils to struggle against Wilkinson County. While the scoring was slow in the early minutes, The Devils steadily built an insurmountable lead as the game progressed. Warren County went to the locker room at the half with a 18-9 lead. The Lady Devils would score 32 points in the second half to dominate the Warriors and win by a score of 50-33.

Leading the way for the Lady Devils was last week's Augusta Chronicle player of the week, Candice Warthen, with 33 points.

While the girl's game went as many had scripted, the game between the Devils and the Cobras did not. Few people outside of Warren County gave the Devils much of a chance against Twiggs County. The Cobras were coming in off of impressive performances against top ranked Wilkinson County and Hancock County.

Warren County quickly let the Cobras know that they were in for a fight. The Devils held a slim one point lead at the end of the first quarter by the score of 14-13. The scond quarter was equally close. This time it was the Cobras with the advantage as they took a one point lead to the locker room with a score of 26-25.

Twiggs maintained their one point lead throughout the 3rd quarter. Warren County used the 4th quarter to prove that they simply wanted the victory more than the Cobras. The Devils outscored their opponent by 10 in the 4th to win by a score of 65-56.

The win was spurred by a well balanced offensive attack by the Devils. Warren County had five players in double digits in the scoring department. Jonathan Lewis led all scorers with 13. Darius Jenkin followed closely with 12. Tay Erwin, Dondracus Dozier, and Stanley Johnson each had 10 points for the contest.

Coach Grant credited the win to defense. "We made the stops on defense in the fourth quarter when we had to", said Grant. "I'm extremely proud of the effort our guys put forth tonight. Few people gave us a chance to win, but we went out and proved what we are capable of doing."

The Devils will have an even tougher mountain to climb tonight as they take on Wilkinson County in the second round of the region playoffs. Grant stated, "We're going to need to get the same offensive and defensive performance for four consecutive quarters that we got in the last quarter of the game against Twiggs if we are to have a chance to beat Wilkinson." Wilkinson County ranks as one of the top five teams in the state.

The Lady Devils will be taking on GMC in the 4:00 game today. GMC comes into the game with a 17-9 record. Coach Rhodes commented, "Our game plan is to press on defense and make them play us man-to-man on offense."

Coach Hutto bids a tough farewell

Screaming Devils football players were summoned to the media center this morning to hear the announcement that many had already feared for weeks now. Coach Hutto met with his team to break the news that he would no longer be their coach.

It has been widely speculated for weeks that Coach Hutto was the leading candidate for the Washington-Wilkes head coaching job. The speculation was laid to rest last night when the Washington-Wilkes Board of Education voted unanimously to approve Coach Hutto for the job. He will assume the athletic director duties as well as head football coach.

The meeting with his players this morning was an emotional one for both players and coach. Coach Hutto began by saying he appreciated everything that the team had done for him. "This is my first team as a head coach. Warren County will always have a special place in my heart", said Hutto.

Hutto encouraged his team to continue the things that have made them successful. "The groundwork has been laid...", said Hutto, "...continue the hard work, discipline, and dedication both on the field and in the classroom." Coach Hutto also said that he was sure that Warren County would find a great coach to build upon the recent Screaming Devil successes.

Through misty eyes, Coach Hutto ended the meeting by saying to his guys, "I love you, I care for you, and I'll miss you." He told them that he would always be there for them. Many players came up to hug their former coach and thank him for everything that he had done for them through the years.

Ja'net Bishop, Principal, Warren County High School, shared, "Mr. Hutto is a committed coach and believes in his students and athletes. He will be deeply missed and we wish him continued success in all of his endeavors."

When asked who he thought might take Coach Hutto's place, sophomore Coby Reynolds said, "Whoever they get will have some big shoes to fill."

Junior quarterback, Tay Erwin, summed up many of the players sentiments when he said, "We've just lost a great coach."

Lady Devils close in on sub-region title

The Warren County Lady Devils continued their march towards the subregion basketball title with a win over the Fighting Irish of Aquinas. Warren County played host to Aquinas Tuesday night in Warrenton.

The Lady Devils brought a 15-8 overall record into the night's contest with the Fighting Irish. The Devils were comining off a defeat Saturday night at the hands of Hancock Central. Hancock is the only Region 4 team to hand the Lady Devils a loss this season.

Warren County entered the game against Aquinas hoping to keep their perfect subregion record intact and the Lady Devils quickly set out to do just that.

Junior point guard, Candice Warthen, quickly took charge of the game for the Screaming Devils. Warthen scored 17 of the first 19 points for the Devils. Aquinas managed to keep the game close as the Lady Devils went to the locker room with a 5 point lead, 22-17.

Warren County managed to stretch their lead to 12 in the third quarter. The game would end by the same margin with the Devils leading, 55-43. Candice Warthen led the charge for the Devils with 39 points.

Warthen's performance impressed more than the usual crowd in attendance for a high school game. University of Arizona women's head basketball coach, Niya Butts, was in attendance to see Warthen play. Coach Rhodes sent Coach Butts film on Warthen and Butts stated, "I had to see her play for myself." Butts flew into Augusta Tuesday afternoon and made the drive over shortly before game time. She left shortly after the game to catch a morning flight back to Arizona.

Warren County's boys team took the court following the girl's game. The Devils were looking to avenge a 3 point loss to the Irish in Augusta earlier in the season. The Devils kept the game close throughout much of the first quarter as Aquinas held a slim 4 point lead going into the 2nd period.

Aquinas stretched their lead to 11 in the closing minutes of the 2nd period. The Irish led at half-time by a score of 35-24.

The Devils came out of the locker room determined not to go down without a fight. They narrowed the Irish lead to 7 at the end of the 3rd and to within two scores for a time during during the 4th period. Aquanis was able to hold on to their lead, however, and won by a score of 66-57.

Leading scorer for the Devils was Darius Jenkins with 15, followed by Jacquez Moss with 14.

Middle School Lady Devils' season ends in playoffs

The Warren County Middle School Lady Devils capped off a successful basketball season Wednesday night with a trip to Hancock to compete in the postseason tournament. The Lady Devils' 11-3 record in the regular season earned them the sub-region crown and a number one seed in the championship tournament. They were paired up against Wilkinson County who also came into the tournament with an identical record at 11-3.

The Lady Warriors of Wilkinson County began the game with an aggressive press that kept Warren County on their heels for much of game. Despite the pressure applied by the Warrior defense, Warren County was able to limit the scoring of Wilkinson County and ended the first period trailing by only six.

Wilkinson County took control in the second period as they outscored the Devils 16-6. Warren County seemed to figure out the Warrior press and had plenty of opportunities to score, however the shots simply would not fall for the Devils on their end of the court. The first half ended with the Devils trailing 28-12.

Halftime did nothing to diminish the momentum of Wilkinson County as they outscored the Devils 20-9 in the second half. Wilkinson won by a final score of 48-21. Tomeka Harris was the leading scorer for the Devils with 11 points.

This year's middle school team was made up of mostly 8th graders. Coach Barnes commented, "The girls were naturally disappointed to end the season the way they did, but I'm proud of their accomplishments this year. Winning the sub-region is nothing to hang our head about."

The Screaming Devils played host to the Tigers of Washington-Wilkes Friday night in Region 4 basketball. The Devils were looking to complete the season sweep of the Tigers after having come away with a victory in the first meeting of the two teams at Washington-Wilkes.

The action began with the JV Devils taking the court first. The JV team set the tone for the night as they dispatched the Tigers by a score of 63-43. Jacques Moss led the scoring for the Screaming Devils with 15.

The Lady Devils looked to get back to their winning form after a tough loss to Hancock Saturday night. Warren County looked to be out to prove they are still the team to beat as the defeated the Lady Tigers 63-32.

Washington-Wilkes managed to keep the game close in the first half as they went to the locker room down by only 9. The second half was all Warren County, however, as the Devils outscored the Tigers by 18 in the final period.

Leading scorer for Warren County was Candice Warthen with 34 points and 7 steals. Takesia Harris had 9 points and Lakerria Williams contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.

The boy's varsity team then took the court with a mission to prove that they were a much improved team since the first meeting of the two schools. The Screaming Devils had to come from 11 points down in the 4th quarter to win by only 2 at Washington-Wilkes. The second meeting would leave little doubt that the Devils have improved this season.

Warren County led the entire contest. After leading by 9 at the half, Warren County opened the second half by outscoring the Tigers 29-16 in the 3rd period. The Devils went on to win by a score of 77-60.

Stanley Johnson was the leading scorer with 25 on the evening. Darius Jenkins contributed 15 and Dondracus Dozier had 12 points.

Warthen Making News Outside of Warren County

Many of those who are beginning to take notice are far removed from the local community of Warren County. This year's improved Lady Devils team as well as her play on the AAU GA/lina '76ers has garnered her plenty of attention from college scouts as well as state basketball publications.

Devils Dominate in Early Region Play

The Devils were hot Tuesday night as they completed the trifecta with three wins against Taliaferro County. The boy's JV team and boy's varsity teams took the court at home for the first time since the Christmas break. The Lady Devils came into the night fresh off a Friday night victory over Wilkinson County in a region crossover game. The Lady Devils defeated the Warriors of Wilkinson by a score of 63-44.

The JV game proved to be the closest of the three contests of the evening. The Jaguars managed to keep within four of the Screaming Devils as they ended the first quarter down by the score of 10-6. Jacquez Moss fired up both the Devils and the crowd with a dunk at the end of the first half as the Devils took control in the second period. Warren County took a 25-10 lead into the locker room at the half and never looked back. Taliaferro County scored 24 in the second half, but it would not be enough. The Devils came away with the victory by a score of 49-34. Jacquan Jackson led all scorers for Warren County with 12 points.

The varsity Lady Devils built upon the excitement generated by the first game of the evening. The girl's game was never in doubt as the Lady Devils jumped out to an early lead and controlled the game for the rest of the way. Warren County held the Jaguars to only 4 points the entire first two periods and led 23-4 at the halfway mark. The Lady Devils scored 19 in the third period and went on to win by a score of 53-22 with most of their starters on the bench for the 4th period. Candice Warthen led the way for Warren County with 22 points.

The biggest bright spot of the night for Warren County came in the final game of the evening. The boy's varsity team has been undergoing a rebuilding process under first year head coach, Levon Grant. Tuesday night's performance was evidence that the pieces are beginning to fall into place for the Screaming Devils.

The Devils welcomed two players to the floor for the first time this season in Dominique Menchaca and Darius Jenkins. Both players wasted no time in making their contributions known.

The Devils led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter, but dominated the game for the rest of the way. Warren County outscored the Jaguars 18-7 in the second period to take a 48-20 lead into the locker room at the half.

The second half was more of the same for the Screaming Devils as Warren County went on to win by a score of 75-44. Dominique Menchaca led all scorers for Warren County with 17. Menchaca was followed closely by Stanley Johnson with 16. Jacquez Moss was also in double digits with 10 points of his own.

While Coach Grant was pleased with the play of his team, he reminded them that they would have to work even harder in the coming days with two big games on the schedule for this weekend. The Devils take on sub-region opponent, Aquinas Friday night before travelling to Hancock to tackle their biggest cross region rival on Saturday night. Everyone is encouraged to come out and support the Screaming Devils.

Middle School Completes Sweep of Taliaferro

Both WCMS basketball teams saw action Saturday morning in games that kicked off a full day's schedule of basketball for Warren County at home against the Jaguars of Taliaferro County. The Devils won both games in the earlier meeting between the two teams and looked to complete a season sweep of the Jaguars by winning both games.

The Lady Devils began the morning action against the Jaguars. Scoring was low in the early going as the Lady Devils held a one point lead by a score of 5-4 at the end of the first quarter. Taliaferro controlled most of the second quarter and limited Warren to only two points. The Devils went to the locker room with the score at 12-7, trailing by 5. It was the first time the Lady Devils trailed at the end of the first half all year.

Warren County rallied in the second half and recaptured the lead in the third quarter. The Lady Devils led the rest of the way as they went on to win by a score of 29-25. Leading the way for the Devils was Tomeka Harris with 17 points.

The WCMS boy's team took the court following the Lady Devils. The second game of the day was never in doubt as the Devils took an early 9-3 lead in the first quarter. Warren County extended their lead in the second and took a 23-8 lead into the half.

The Devils maintained their lead in the third and entered the fourth quarter with the lead by a score of 33-19. The Jaguars managed to close the gap a little in the 4th, but is simply was not enough. The Devils went on to win by a score of 40-30.

Leading scorer for the Devils was Deon Smith with 17.

Devils on a Hot Streak

The Warren County Middle School continued their winning ways Wednesday night by picking up a pair of wins over region opponent Washington-Wilkes. The home game for Warren County marked the second and final meeting of the season between the two squads. Both Screaming Devil teams were coming off of wins against Glascock the night.

The Lady Devils had already secured one victory against the Tigers of Washington-Wilkes in the season opener at Washington-Wilkes and came into the game looking to sweep the season series. Both teams struggled to score in the early going as easy layups would not fall for either team. Warren County finally found the bottom of the basket with 2:25 to go in the first period and opened the scoring floodgates for the Screaming Devils. Warren County took a 16-4 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Lady Devils appeared to have the game in hand at the end of the third leading 24-9. The Tigers battled back in the fourth quarter to make it an exciting finish and narrowed the Warren County lead to only two. The Tigers used a two man press and Warren County was slow to adapt, turning the ball over numerous times. The Lady Devils were not to be denied, however, and came away with the win by the score of 30-26.

The Warren County Boys entered the game at home looking to avenge an earlier season opening loss to the Tigers. It looked as if the Tigers might well be on their way to a repeat performance against the Devils in the first quarter as they took an early lead in the contest. Warren County found their stride in the second quarter and went to the locker room down by only two.

Coach Blount challenged his squad in the locker room by saying, "They're simply beating you to the spots when we're on defense. Don't let anybody out-hustle you!" The Devils came out of the locker room and did just that. Warren County took the lead in the third quarter and the game went back-and-forth for pretty much the rest of the way. The Devils held on in the end, however to earn their third victory of the year by the score of 30-27.

Leading scorers for the girls were Tomeka Harris with 13 and Raneisha Andrews with 11. Leading the way for the boys was Deon Smith with 14 points.

The WCMS girls record now stands at 5-1 while the boys are at .500 for the first time this season with a record of 3-3. Both squads will be off until Thursday when they'll take on Glascock in Gibson.

WCMS Devils Pound the Panthers

The Warren County Middle School Devils played host to the Panthers of Glascock Monday night. The Devils came away with their first double win of the season as both the boys and the girls came away victorious.

The girls led off the evening by looking to get back to their winning ways after losing a close one at the buzzer to Talifero County last week. The Lady Devils took the lead early against Glascock and never looked back. Tomeka Harris once again led the Devils in scoring with 14 points on the evening. The Warren County Middlle School girls ran their record to 4-1 on the season with a 28-12 final score of Glascock.

The WCMS boys fared equally as well as the girls in their game against the Panthers. The Screaming Devils established an early lead and dominated throughout the contest. Leading 35-6 at the half, Coach Fred Blount used the game as an opportunity to get some action for his younger players in the second half. The younger Devils proved up to the task as Warren County overpowered the Panthers by a score of 57-17. Leading scorer for the Devils was Deon Smith with 14 points.

The Warren County boys team will look to improve upon their 2-3 record on the season by avenging an earlier loss against Washington-Wilkes this Wednesday night at home. Start time for the first game is scheduled for 4:30.

Middle School Devils Split With Dogs

The Middle School Screaming Devils came away with both a victory and a defeat Thursday night against the Thomson Bulldogs. Warren County travelled to Thomson for their third game of the season. The game marked the first of the season for the Bulldogs and the first game played in the new gym of the new school as well.

The Lady Devils brought a two game winning streak into Thomson and were eager to prove that they are one of the top teams in the Super Ten Region against the Bulldogs. Warren County used a quick and efficient press to jump out to a 9-2 lead in the first quarter.

The Lady Devils extended their lead in the second quarter by again limiting the scoring of the Bulldogs. Thomson was held scoreless in the second period until 2:13 to go in the quarter. Warren County went to the locker room up by the score of 15-5.
The Bulldogs looked to be in danger of getting blown out in the third quarter as Warren County held Thomson scoreless and ended the period with a 21-5 lead. Thomson refused to quit, however, as the Lady Devils appeared to tire somewhat in the fourth period. The Bulldogs went on a scoring frenzy and narrowed the score to 24-21 with 3:00 left to play in the contest.

Lady Devils head coach, Shontier Barnes, told her players, "If you want it, you have to go get it. Thomson is not going to give you anything." Warren County responded and dug deep within themselves to hold on in the final minutes and come away with the victory by a score of 28-24.

Leading the way for the Devils was Quininshea Kuhn with 11 points for the evening followed closely by Tomeka Harris with 10 points of her own.

The boy's game followed the girl's with the Screaming Devils looking to end a two game losing streak to start the season. Thomson's boys, like their girls, appeared to show some first game jitters in the first quarter. The Bulldog's struggle to knock the rust off, coupled with a swarming defense put on by the Devils, kept the scoring low in the first period. The first quarter ended with Thomson holding a slim 3 point lead by a score of 5-3. The Bulldogs found their rhythm in the second period putting up 12 points to go to the locker room at the half up 17-7.

The Devils came out in the second half determined to make a game of it and narrowed the margin somewhat in the third period, but still trailed by six going into the fourth. Thomson finished strong, however, and handed Warren County their third loss of the season by a final score of 34-21.

Leading scorer for Warren County for the second consecutive game was Rashawn Harris with 6 points.

Middle School Basketball Season Underway

The Warren County Middle School basketball season is in full swing. The Screaming Devils took to the court Monday for their second game in three days as they took on Louisville Middle School. Both the boys and girls saw action. Warren County came away with a split in the evening contests.

The Lady Devils, fresh off a fine performance Saturday against Washington-Wilkes, took the floor first. They quickly jumped off to an early lead as they ended the first quarter ahead 11-2.

The Lady Devils held Louisville scoreless in the second while almost doubling their own point total and carried a 20-2 lead into the locker room at the half. Louisville managed to get their offense going in the second half, but it simply wasn't enough. Warren County held on to get the victory by a score of 33-16, running their record to 2-0 for the season. Leading scorers for the Devils were Tyjah Hill with 12 points followed closely by Tomeka Harris with 10 points.

The boy's squad followed the girls for the second game of the evening against Louisville. The Screaming Devils were looking for their first win of the season after losing by only two to Washington-Wilkes on Saturday.

Warren County dug an early hole for themselves when they fell behind by a score of 4-14 in the first quarter. The Devils managed to close the gap somewhat in the second quarter and went to the locker room down 11-16 at the half.

Warren County came out of the locker room playing aggresive defense by swarming to the ball. Louisville was able to beat the Devils to the boards, however, and out-rebounded Warren County to extend their lead to 11 at the end of the third quarter.

Louisville pulled away in the fourth and went on to defeat the Screaming Devils by a score of 38-21. Rashawn Harris lead all scorers for Warren County with 9 points.

The middle school takes to the road again Thursday as they travel to Thomson take on the Thomson Middle School Bulldogs.

Devils Eliminated in First Round of Playoffs

The Screaming Devils were eliminated from the state playoffs Friday night by a first round loss to the Wesleyan Wolves of Norcross. Warren County entered the playoffs as the number four seed from region seven. Wesleyan defeated Athens Academy one week earlier to earn the number one seed out of region eight.

Few gave the Devils a chance against Wesleyan. One Atlanta Journal Constitution columnist even predicted a blowout by the Wolves over the Devils. Warren County proved early on that they were not going to lay down without as fight. The Devils stunned the Wesleyan crowd into silence when they struck first to take the early lead by capitalizing off a Wesleyan fumble for a touchdown.

The two teams traded scores after that and Wesleyan took a slim one point lead into the locker room by a score of 14-13.

Warren County looked strong coming out to start the second half. The Devils surprised the Wolves as well as the Devils' coaching staff when Antonio Benton miss-kicked the kickoff resulting in an on sides kick. The Devils recovered and quickly marched the ball down the field to take the lead with their third score of the evening.

Warren County's lead would be short-lived, however, as Wesleyan responded with a scoring drive of their own to make the score 21-19. The Wolves would never again relinquish the lead as the Devils seemed to tire in the fourth quarter. Wesleyan added a couple of scores late in the contest to go on to win by a score of 42-19.

Warren County was led by the stellar play of the only three members of the team. Johnathon Lewis intercepted a pass and had several key tackles while both Kentrell Latimore and Antonio Benton scored touchdowns for the Devils.

Devils fall to Laney in Scrimmage

The Screaming Devils took to the court Thursday, November 13 for a scrimmage game against the Laney Wildcats in Augusta. Laney proved to be a tough early contest for both Warren County squads.

The night began with the Lady Devils taking the court first. The Devils struggled in the early going. Nothing seemed to fall for the Lady Devils in the early going as Laney took a commanding seventeen point lead into the 2nd quarter. The Lady Devils had more success finding the bucket later in the game, however the Laney held on to win by a score of 68-43.

The boys took to the court for the second game of the evening. The Screaming Devils were playing minus several players that Coach Grant plans to factor into the starting five this season due to football season being extended into the state playoffs. Laney took advantage of the young Warren County squad and jumped out to a dominating lead early on.

Warren County struggled to bring the ball up court against a fast and aggresive Laney press. Laney used the press all night to limit the ability of Warren County to mount much of an offensive attack. Laney won the contest with a final score of 88-31.

Coach Grant stated after the game, "We basically had a J.V. team with a few varsity players playing against a varsity team. We should be better when we get our full squad after football season." The Devils look to benefit from the addition of seniors, Johnathan Lewis and Kentrell Latimore as well as point guard, Tay Erwin.

WCHS Honors Senior Athletes

Warren County High School used the last home football game of the season Friday night to honor their senior athletes. Those honored included not only football players, but all senior fall athletes, cheer leaders, band members, and auxiliary members as well.

There are only three senior members of this year's Screaming Devil football team and they led the list of honorees. Kentrell Latimore, Johnathan Lewis, and Antonio Benton were recognized as being the first senior class in recent history to go to the state football playoffs all four years of their high school career. Both Latimore and Lewis were preseason all-state picks in football.

Being honored for their participation as cheerleaders were Cedrica Bacon and Tiandra Harris. Seniors, Crystal Gillom and Shantana Moss were honored for their participation in the band auxiliary corp as well. Exchange student, Sulgun Becnezcvec was also recognized for her participation in the band program this year.

The Screaming Devils took the field following the Senior Night activities for their final game of the season against the Lincoln County Red Devils. The Red Devils took control of the game early and went on to win by a score of 41-7.

Gym Opens for 2008 Hardcourt Season

Football is nearing the end of the regular season and that means basketball season is not far off. Monday marked the first official day of practice for basketball throughout the state of Georgia. Warren County took full advantage of the first day of practice as the boys and girls teams hit the court running.

Lady Devils head coach, Jamaal Rhodes, took to the court with his team first. The Lady Devils return almost the entire team from last year and are led by junior point guard, Candice Warthen. Coach Rhodes and his team have set some lofty goals for their squad. According to Rhodes, "I really feel that we can win the region this year. We've been working hard towards that goal."

Rhodes went on to say, "I feel we can make some noise in the state playoffs as well. It'll all depend upon the draw and how the brackets are set up."

The Lady Devils are probably in better shape physically than they have been in recent years. Coach Rhodes has stressed conditioning since taking over the program. "I don't have to tell my girls to work out. It's become second nature to them. They do it whether I'm there or not."

First year head coach, Levon Grant, also took to the court with his team yesterday. The Screaming Devils took the floor after the Lady Devils. Coach Grant had a total of 21 boys come out for the first day of practice. That number did not include the football players who will remain on the gridiron for at least three more weeks.

Coach Grant put his potential players through their paces Monday as they waited for the Lady Devils to finish their practice. The Devils took to the hill behind the football field for some extra conditioning work as they waited for their time in the gym.

Grant looks forward to having his full squad after the football season ends, however he plans to use the next few weeks to work more closely with the underclassmen. Grant is assisted by Coach Stephens who will be the head coach for the J.V. team.

The Screaming Devils will have some big shoes to fill this season as they look to replace almost every starter from last season's team. Junior, Tay Erwin, is the lone starter returning this season.

Both squads play their first game of the season November 13th when they travel to Laney for a scrimmage game.

Screaming Devils Secure Playoff Spot

The Screaming Devils secured a fourth consecutive trip to the state playoffs with a victory over Aquinas Friday night. The Devils blanked the Fighting Irish by a score of 32-0. The win, coupled with last week's victory over Hancock, gave Warren County their first back-to-back victories of the season.

Warren County took the opening kick-off and quickly established that it would be a good night for the Screaming Devil offense. The Devils scored on their first possession but failed to convert the extra point. The Irish offense showed some early success, managing to move the ball down to about the Warren County 25 yard line. The Devil Defense then pushed the Irish back and Aquinas was forced to punt the ball away on fourth and long.

The Devil offense then took control of the game and never really looked back. The night turned into one of the best offensive games of the year for Warren County. Sophomore running back, Coby Reynolds racked up over 250 yards on the ground, most coming on long touchdown runs. Probably the biggest surprise of the night was quarterback, Tay Erwin, passing for over 150 yards with his main target of the night being Kentrell Latimore. Most of those yards came in the final two minutes of the first half when Warren County went to the spread offense and used the opportunity to work on their two minute offense.

Warren County's defense never allowed Aquinas to really do anything offensively after their first possession. Led by senior linebacker Johnathan Lewis, the Devils put pressure on the Irish quarterback all night long. Antonio Benton and Corneilus Pinkston combined to provide excellent pass coverage for the Devils.

Warren County ran their season record to 4-4 with the victory over Aquinas. The Devils travel to Washington for another big Region 7 match-up Friday night against the Washington-Wilkes Tigers. The loss by Washington-Wilkes to Wilkinson County creates added importance to Friday night's game as both teams are 4-4 on the season and a win by Warren County would guarantee them no worse than 3rd in the region.

The Devils will need the support of everyone Friday night and we encourage anyone who can to make the short trip to Washington to cheer on the Screaming Devils as they take on Washington-Wilkes.

WCHS Celebrates Homecoming

Warren County High School celebrated their annual homecoming activities last week. Students participated daily in spirt days that included Tacky Day and Twin Day.

The week's festivities got off to a rousing start with the annual Powderpuff game on Wednesday night. The game pitted the seniors and sophomores against the Juniors and freshmen. The junior and freshman team, coached by juniors, Tay Erwin, Stanley Johnson, and Javier Lowe, came out on top by a score of 13-6. The senior team was coached by Johnathan Lewis and Kentrell Latimore. The game showcased some of the stellar athletic talent of the WCHS girls.

Ticaro Heath, C.J. Williams, and Tommy Seals, members of last year's graduating class, served as referees for the game. No game would be complete without cheerleaders, and this game was no different. A number of WCHS male students donned school cheerleader uniforms and cheered both teams on as they gave it their all on the gridiron.

Homecoming events continued Thursday night with the annual coronation event. Warren County Middle and High School gathered in the auditorium to crown representatives from each class. Students voted in each class voted for a male and female to represent them as well as an overall representative for the school. Cameron Bolton was chosen as the homecoming king and Larissa Hudson was crowned Miss WCHS by last year's title holder, Sharane Johnson.

Homecoming culminated on a rainy but event filled Friday evening. Many Warren County graduates and students assembled in the newly dedicated Holliman Auditorium to honor the late Albert J. Massey by naming the new football stadium in his honor. Several former students and co-workers took the stage to express just how much Mr. Massey meant to the community. The dedication ended with the unveiling of a monument near the concession stand and the unveiling of the scoreboard which now reads "Albert J. Massey Field".

The Screaming Devils then took the field for the homecoming game against the Bulldogs of Hancock Central. The Devils wasted no time putting points on the board as they capitalized on a Bulldog turnover on the first play from scrimmage and never looked back. The Devils shutout the Bulldogs 27-0. Miss Tiandra Harris was crowned the 2008 Homecoming Queen at half-time.

Devils Open 2008 1-1

The Screaming Devils have opened the 2008 football season by posting a 1-1 record. Warren County got the young season off to a fine start with a first week win over the Panthers of Glascock, but followed it up with a loss to Landmark Christian the very next week.

The opening contest against Glascock was a testiment to both how much Glascock County has improved the past few years as well as to how young Warren County is as a team this year. Coming into this year's game, Glascock had only managed to score 20 points on Warren County since 1974. The Panthers nearly equaled that total in one game, losing by only a touchdown. The Screaming Devils showed their youth and inexperience as they made several mistakes that kept Glascock in the game until the very end.

It was one of those very same young players that ended the Panthers hopes for an upset however. With time running out, DeVonte Davis, a freshman, sacked the Panther quarterback for a big loss and forced Glascock to turn the ball over on downs. Warren County could then run out the clock for a 22-16 win.

The following week once again found the Screaming Devils at home. This time the Devils were looking to remain unbeaten at home in their new stadium against seven time region champion Landmark Christian.

The game remained scoreless until about halfway through the third quarter. Warren County then lost Johnathon Lewis to an ankle injury. Lewis, player of the week against Glascock with 18 tackles, has been an anchor for a very young defense. Landmark took advantage of Lewis being on the sidelines and went on to score 20 points in the final quarter and a half to win by a score of 20-0.

Even though injured, Lewis still managed to record his second consecutive defensive player of the week award for the Screaming Devils.

Next up for Warren County is a trip to McDonough to face the Charger of Eagle's Landing. Eagle's Landing is another region 5 opponent that the Screaming Devils defeated in 2007.

Warren County Wins Sportsmanship Award

Warren County High School recently received the Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award for Region 7 from the Georgia High School Association. According to WCHS Principle, Ja'net Bishop, "We have made great strides in strengthening our school climate and culture and this confirms for us what we've known all along.....we have great kids and they rise to our expectations!"

Screaming Devils Begin 2008 Campaign

Warren County began their 2008 football campaign last night with a scrimmage game against Johnson County. The night was about more than football for both teams. Johnson County played host to the Screaming Devils for a pre-game meeting for Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A member of the Trojan staff encouraged both teams to challenge themselves and become all they can be. The meeting ended in prayer and with both teams sharing the pre-game meal and fellowship before hitting the field for the night's contest.

Warren County's youth and inexperience was fully evident once the game got underway. The Screaming Devils return only three seniors from a team that went deep into the playoffs for the past two seasons. Coach Hutto and staff find themselves forced to start many freshmen and sophomores at key positions this season. Warren County's lack of experience led to a 26-6 loss in the opening scrimmage for the Screaming Devils.

While the young players were learning the ropes, the Seniors proved that they are ready to lead the way in the rebuilding process. Kentrell Latimore provided the night's only score for the Screaming Devils with a determined run up the middle for a touchdown. Antonio Benton came close to adding a touchdown of his own with a 34 yard pass reception from Dondracus Dozier, but was pulled out of bounds just a few yards short of the endzone. Defensive standout, Johnathon Lewis anchored the defense for the Screaming Devils for the first three quarters and helped to keep the game within reach. Lewis and the other Seniors sat out most of the 4th quarter.

Much of the night was spent teaching and correcting the underclassmen. The Screaming Devil staff got a first hand look at how much work will have to be put into the rebuilding process. Next up for Warren County is the season opener against the Panthers of Glascock County. Kick-off is set for 7:30, August 29, at Warren County High School. The Screaming Devils will be looking to remain undefeated within the confines of their new stadium by getting the first win of the season against the Panthers.

Screaming Devils Begin New Season

The Warren County Screaming Devils have ended their summer workouts and the 2008 season has officially begun. Friday marked the first day that teams could officially practice under GHSA rules. 2008 will be a year of rebuilding for the Devils after losing one of the most talented classes to graduation that the team has seen in years.

The Screaming Devils began that rebuilding process this past summer with workouts in the weight room and by attending several camps. They also participated in several passing competitions over the summer months. The camps and passing leagues provided invaluable experience to a very young Warren County team. The Screaming Devils only return three Seniors on this year's squad.

Coach Lee Hutto and his staff has less than three weeks to prepare the team for their first constest of the season. The Screaming Devils will play a scrimmage game against Johnson County on Thursday, August 21 at 6:00 at Johnson County High School. The Devils then open the regular season the following week in Warrenton against the Panthers of Glascock County.

Warren County Boy's Place 2nd in Region Track

The WCHS boy's track team finished 2nd in the region to Wilkinson County for the second consecutive season. There was a total of ten teams participating in the region track meet.

First place finishers for Warren County were: Cornelius Pinkston, 800 meter run; Antonio Benton, long jump; Curtis Williams, discus and shot put.

Second place finishers were: Cobie Reynolds, 200 meter dash; Tommy Seals, triple jump; Montavious Erwin, high jump.

Also representing Warren County with third place finishes were: Cobie Reynolds, 100 meter dash; Roderick Moss, high jump; Johnathan Lewis, shot put; Kyree Liggins, discus; Roderick Moss, Antonio Benton, Andrew Webb, and Cobie Reynolds in the 400 meter relay.

Fourth place finishers were: Cornelius Pinkston, 400 meter dash; Daniel Crawford, 800 meter run; Antonio Benton, 200 meter dash; Cobie Reynolds, long jump.

All first and second place finishers qualify for the state track competition to be held in Jefferson May 8, 9, and 10.

Warren County Girl's Capture Region Track Title

The WCHS girl's track team captured the Region 7 track title at the region track meet. The meet, which was hosted by Warren County, was held at Laney High School on April 18.

1st place winners from Warren County were: Candice Warthen, long jump and high jump; Tiandra Harris, 100 meter hurdles; Lakerria Williams, triple jump; Tykesia Johnson, Lakerria Williams, Shay Harris, and Candice Warthen in the 400 meter relay.

2nd place finishers were: Candice Warthen, 100 meter dash; Jashanna Graves, 800 meter run; Lashundria Reynolds, shotput and discus.

3rd place honors went to: Jashanna Graves, 1 mile; Tykesia Johnson, triple jump; Tykesia Johnson, Jashanna Graves, Sondrea Hardin, and Candice Warthen for the 1600 meter relay team.

4th place finishers were: Tykesia Johnson, 400 meters; Tiandra Harris, 300 meter hurdles; Cedrica Bacon, discus.

Candice Warthen also won the meet's high point trophy as the top performer in the region meet.

All first and second place finishers in the region meet will qualify for the state meet to be held May 1,2,3 in Albany, GA.

Warren County Honors Athletic Excellence

Warren County Middle and High School both recently honored their students who displayed excellence and represented their schools on the athletic field. WCMS held their banquet on Monday, April 27 and WCHS held their banquet on Tuesday, April 28.

Middle school cheerleading award winners were: Shanquisha Brinkley, Best Jumper; Briunna Franklin, Most Dependable; Tabria Hudson and Denishia Kitchens, Coach's Award.

Middle school baseball honors went to: Cortez Wentz, Coaches Award; Ricardo Jones, Hustle Award; Quentavis Cobb, Most Improved Player.

Middle school football awards were received by: Tobias Latimore, Leadership Award; Damien Clark, Most Improved; Cortez Wentz, Big Hit; Devarius Davis, Best Defensive Player; Devonte' Davis, Best Offensive Player; Javoris Wilburn, Lineman Award; Jaitavius Jackson, Most Improved; Quentavius Johnson, Most Outstanding Player.

Middle school boy's basketball honors went to: Jaquez Menchaca, Most Improved; Dextrell Norris, Leadership Award; Bentrayvious Ramsey, Hustle Award; Michael Scott, Best Defensive Award; Quentavius Johnson, Best Offense Award; Edricus Williams, Most Outstanding Player.

Winning awards for girl's track were: Tyjah Hill, Best Field Award and Tomeka Harris, Best Runner Award.

The WCHS banquet saw many students recognized for their accomplishments as well. Three awards were especially important to those in attendance and were saved for the end of the evening. Tommy Seals was presented with the Albert J. Masey Award which goes to the Male Athlete of the Year. Seals, a senior, was a four year starter in football and basketball, all-state and all area in football, scored over 1,000 points by the end of his junior year in basketball, and has qualified for state in track this season.

Candice Warthen was named the winner of the Milledge Samuels award which is given to the female athlete of the year. Warthen led the Screaming Devils on the softball field, basketball court, and in track and field. Warthen has already scored over 1,000 points in just two seasons with the Screaming Devil Varsity basketball team. Like Seals, Warthen has qualified for the state track meet in several events. According to track coach, Marleau Blount, "Candice is blessed with plenty of talent. What makes her great, however, is her work ethic. Candice works harder than many male athletes and that is a lesson that many of our student athletes, both male and female can learn from her."

Boy's head basketball coach, Brian Wallace, was also presented with an award for his eight years of service to Warren County High School. Coach Wallace is one of the longest serving faculty members at WCHS. Wallace has announced that he will not be returning to Warren County next school year. The basketball team presented Coach Wallace with a plaque thanking him for his "hard work, dedication, and loyalty to the betterment of the Warren County High School athletic programs." WCHS wishes Coach Wallace the best of luck in his future endeavors and thanks him for his contribution to the the Warren County Community.

Diamond Devils continue to improve

The Warren County Middle School Screaming Devils continue to show improvement towards the end of the season. 2008 marked a return to baseball for WCMS for the first time since 2002. The team's play at the end of the season reflects the amount of hard work put in by the coaches and players over the past couple of months.

The Diamond Devils wrapped up the season this week with games against Washington County and Lincoln County. The Devils saw double header action Monday against Washington County. After dropping the first game by a score of 20-3, Warren County bounced back to make a respectable showing in the second game, losing by a score of only 11-2. Monday marked the first time the team played four innings in a game all season long.

Wednesday found the Devils in action at Lincoln County. Warren County once again managed to extend the game into the fourth inning. The game marked the best defensive performance by the team all year. Warren County held the Red Devils to only one run in each of the first two innings behind the stellar defensive plays of Jacquez Menchaca in left field and Deonte Battle at shortstop and Durrell Berry at third. Menchaca made a leaping catch in left and held on for the out after hitting the ground to save a run. Berry added to the defensive effort with a fine play and throw from third base to record an out.

The Screaming Devils continued to struggle at the plate. Coach Moon reflected on the season by stating, "The part of our game that we need to improve the most is our hitting. I'm proud of the progress that our guys made this year defensively. Hopefully we can use the offseason to work on our hitting."

Next season looks good for the Devils with a large number of returning starters to provide some experience for the 2009 squad.

Devils dash to victory in Jefferson County

The Warren County Screaming Devils have always had high expectations when it comes to track and field. Thursday marked the beginning of another year in a sport where the Devils expect to do well year in and year out. This year's Warren County squad is much younger than previous squads. Despite their relative youth, the Devils still put up an impressive performance in their first meet of the year at Jefferson County.

Warren County came away with four first place finishes for the day. Cobie Reynolds won the 100 meter dash. Kentrell Latimore placed first in the 110 meter high hurdles. Tommy Seals won the triple jump and Antonio Benton won the long jump.

The Screaming Devils followed up their victories with five solid second place finishes as well. Alonzo Benton finished second in the one mile run. Gregory Howard placed second in the two mile run. Tommy Seals took second in the 400 meter dash while Cornelius Pinkston was second in the 800 meter run. In the discus competition, Kyree Liggins came in second for the Screaming Devils.

Tay Erwin took third in the high jump, Johnathan Lewis took third in the shot put, and Kentrell Latimore was third in the triple jump.

Coach Arrington said of his team, "It was an excellent first outing. I think we are definitely in better shape than we were this time last year." Arrington also commented about his team's youth by saying, "We only have three seniors competing this year. Nine out of the twelve athletes that we had place were underclassmen. These guys will only get better with time."

The Lady Devils also made an impression in Jefferson County. Once again it was the underclassmen scoring points for the Devils as the Lady Devils came away with the top team honors for the competition.

First place finishes went to Candice Warthen (sophomore)in the 100 meter dash and the high jump, Lakerria Williams (sophomore) in the triple jump, Tynisha Harris (sophomore) in the 300 meter hurdles, Ja'Shanna Graves (freshman) in the 800 meter run, and Tiandra Harris (junior) in the 110 meter hurdles.

Second place finishes went to Takeisa Harris (freshman) in the discus, Cedrica Bacon (junior) in the shot put, Tiandra Harris in the high jump, and Tykesia Johnson (freshman) in the triple jump.

Third place finishes were recorded by Sondrea Hardin (sophomore) in the 100 and 200 meter dash, Bianca Pugh (freshman) in the shot put, Tynesha harris in the 400 meters, Tynesha Tolbert in the 800 meters, and Mykea Carter for the 300 meter hurdles.

The Lady Devils fielded two 400 meter relay teams. The first team, made up of Tykesia Johnson, Lakerria Williams, Tiandra Harris, and Candice Williams, placed first. The second team of Sondrea Harden, Mykeia Carter, Takeisa Harris, and Tynisha Harris placed third.

The next meet for the Screaming Devils will be Thursday, February 27 at Thomson.

Burley accepts scholarship offer

Travis Burley committed to attend Garden City Community Junior College in Kansas today and accepted their offer of a full scholarship to play football.

Garden City is a school that prides themselves on preparing both students and athletes for success at larger schools. The Broncbuster website lists a number of alumni that have gone on to success at not only larger schools, but the NFL as well.

Burley took his time in choosing where he would begin his college career. "It basically boiled down to a school in Minnesota and Garden City. Garden City plays both football and basketball. Just the chance that I could continue to play both sports led me to Kansas."

On hand for today's signing was brother, Bobby Burley, Burley's mother Kathleen, sister Kathy and Screaming Devil coaches Alvin Wright and Lee Hutto.

Students excel in weight lifting competition

Steve Burley, a 9th grade student at Warren County High School, placed second out of about thirty students in his weight class at the Area 4 weight lifting competition held at Jefferson County High School on March 8. The participants competed in three different lifts including the bench press, the squat, and the power clean.

Burley had the best lift in the squat competition at 475 pounds. He also bench pressed 255 pounds and power cleaned 250 pounds. Burley's second place finish earns him a trip to the state weightlifting competition in Perry on March 22 where he will compete with some of the strongest students in the state.

Frank Ivey, also a freshman, turned in an excellent performance in the power clean competition. Ivey lifted 295 pounds. Ivey's performance placed him just under the weight lifted by 6'6", 350 pound, #1 offensive line prospect in the country, A.J. Harmon of Jefferson County.

Trophies were also given to Warren County students for winning the local competition among WCHS weightlifting students. Sean Heath took home honors for best powerclean at 265 lbs. and best bench press at 315 lbs.. Frank Ivey won the best squat at 545 pounds. Ivey also took home the strongest Screaming Devil award. Damian Johnson took the honor of most improved.

Despite loss, Screaming Devils show signs of improvement

It has been a season of learning and hard work for the Screaming Devils on the baseball diamond. Warren County played host to Wrens yesterday for the second match-up of the season between the two teams. With a victory under their belt last week, the Devils were out to prove that they had become a better team than they were when they faced Wrens in the season opener.

Both Deonte Battle and Darwin Montgomery struggled to find the strike zone in the first inning for the second consecutive game. The Colts took advantage of the free passes and scored thirteen in the first inning on no hits and one error. Warren County failed to get anything going in the bottom half of the first inning.

The pitching for the Screaming Devils improved in the second inning and the Devils got the opportunity to showcase their improved defensive skills. Second baseman, "Miami" Johnson recorded the first out of the inning by catching a fly ball at second base. Devonte Battle then caught a fly ball at third for the second out. Wrens loaded the bases once again after a couple of walks and an error by the devils. Johnson once again came up with the play at second catching a fly ball to end the inning.

The Warren County bats seemed to be sparked to life by the defensive play of the Devils in the field. Jatavious Jackson led off the inning with a walk. Deondre Battle moved Jackson into scoring position with a solid single and Johnson followed up with a single of his own to score Jackson. Waters lined out to the shortstop to end the inning for Warren County.

Wrens scored four in the top of the third off of a couple of hard hit balls to the outfield to make the score 17-1. Warren County needed to score two runs in their half of the third to extend the game to the fourth inning for the first time this season. Ricardo Jones reached on a walk and quickly stole second and advanced to third on an overthrow by the catcher. Mitch Woods then struggled to find the plate for the Colts and walked three out of the next four batters and allowed Jones to score on a passed ball. Deondre Battle came to the plate with the bases loaded and two out with a chance to extend the game. He would not get the chance however as Deonte Battle was thrown out trying to score on a passed ball. The game ended with a score of 17-2.

"Defensively, we are much better than the beginning of the season. We made twelve errors in our first meeting with Wrens. Today we only had two," stated Coach Swann. Coach Moon backed up Swann by saying, "The pitching just wasn't there today. We played well in the field and at the plate, but couldn't throw strikes. Hopefully we'll put it all together here real soon." Coach Blount also said of the team's performance this season, "Win or lose, you have to be proud of these guys for the effort and improvement they have shown so far."

Next up for the Screaming Devils is Thomson. The game is to be played Thursday at Sweetwater Park in Thomson. Game time is set for 4:30.

Warren County Middle Posts 1st Diamond Victory

It has been years since Warren County Middle School has fielded a baseball team. Most of the school's eligible players have never even played organized baseball. Coach Moon, Coach Blount and Coach Swann simply hoped for the team to improve and lay the foundation for the program this season. Imagine their surprise when the Screaming Devils were not only competitive, but victorious as well in only their second game of the season.

Warren County defeated Hancock Central by a score of 13-3 at Hancock Wednesday. The victory followed a 15-0 loss in three innings at the hands of Wrens last Thursday. When asked what the difference was between the two games, Coach Moon replied, "We put the bat on the ball against Hancock, which is something we didn't do against Wrens. The team also looked much more comfortable on the field after getting some real game experience."

Leading the Screaming Devils at the plate with hits were Cortez Wentz, Darwin Montgomery, Deondre Battle, Javari "Miami" Johnson, and Jontavious Jackson. Deonte Battle threw for two strike outs in the first inning before running into trouble and walking the next batter and hitting the following two. Darwin Montgomery came on in relief to close out the inning. Montgomery went the rest of the game and recorded eight strikeouts and two walks while only giving up two runs.

Warren County takes on Glascock County at home today at 4:30. All fans are encouraged to come out and support the Screaming Devils.

WCHS Faces Stiff Competition at State

After finishing third in the region tournament that was held at Warren County High School, both WCHS teams faced one of the toughest draws they could have gotten. Many across the state considered the first round match-up of region five and region seven as one that pitted the two toughest regions in the state against each other.

The boys got the weekend started for the Screaming Devils on Friday night with their game against Whitefield Acadamy of Cobb County. Whitefield is considered one of the premier basketball programs in all the state. They are a regular threat to win the state championship in any given year.

The Screaming Devils started off strong and held the score close throughout the first quarter. The end of the first period found the Devils down only three. The second period was all Whitefield, however, and that proved to be the difference in the game. Whitefield held a fifteen point advantage going into the half. The Devils knew there was plenty of basketball left to play, however, and their talented core of seniors was not about to go down without a fight. Warren County narrowed Whitefield's lead to six at one point in the second half and never trailed by more than the half time lead of fifteen at any point in the second half. Whitefield managed to close the door on the Screaming Devils in the fourth quarter by a score of 89-74.

The Lady Devils were looking to cap off a year that saw much improvement on the court with a win in the state tournament. Like the boys, the Lady Devils found themselves up against some still competition in South West Atlanta Christian Academy. The Lady Devils scored first in the contest and kept the score close for much of the first quarter before South West pulled away at the end of the first. The Warriors defeated the Lady Devils by a score of 60-42. Leading the way for Warren County was sophomore sensation Candace Warthen with 22 points.

Post-Season Football Honors

The accolades just keep on coming for many of our Warren County Screaming Devil football players. Members of the board of education along with Superintendint Carey and Coach Hutto met in the media center to congratulate and recognize players who were sellected to All-Area and All-State teams for their efforts on the field during the 2007 season.

Those receiving awards were: Kentrell Latimore (Junior); All-Area honorable mention, Quay Lester (Senior); All-Area honorable mention, Jonathon Lewis (Junior); 2nd team All-Area, Devon Walls (Senior); 1st team All-Area; 1st team Atlanta Journal & Constitution All-State; 1st team Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-State, Devarrus Reynolds (Senior); 1st team Georgia Athletic Coaches Association All-State; All-Area honorable mention, Tommy Seals (Senior); 1st team All-Area; AJC 1st team All-State; All-Area Georgia player of the year; north single A offensive player of the year, Travis Burley (Senior); 3rd team All-Area; All-State honorable mention.

Several of the members of the much talented class of 2007 are being recruited to play at the next level. Quarterback Tommy Seals has signed with G.M.C., Devon Walls is considering LaGrange College and Devarrus Reynolds and Travis Burley are being recruited by multiple schools.

Seals Signs With GMC

After four years of leading the Screaming Devils on the gridiron, Tommy Seals looks will become a Bulldog. Seals signed with Georgia Military College to play football Wednesday and looks forward to the challenge.

When asked about his decision Seals stated, "G.M.C. is known as one of the strongest junior college programs in the country. I feel that they can best prepare me for the next level." Seals is also excited about the fact that the short drive to G.M.C. will allow many of his close friends and family the opportunity to see him play at the next level.

Seals will join another former Screaming Devil at G.M.C. and hope to reunite with a name that is very familiar to Warren County football fans. Quadrez "Disco" Reese enrolled at G.M.C. in January and is currently going through tryouts in hopes of making the team.
