Devils Close Out 2012 Regular Season

Tianca Evans drives
for a layup.
Warren County wrapped up the regular season at home with a pair of wins against Jefferson County Friday night.  Both Screaming Devil teams qualify for the region tournament and used the non-region game against Jefferson County as a tune-up for this week's tournament.

The Lady Devils got off to a slow start against the Warriors of Jefferson County.  Warren County had trouble getting their shots to fall and the Warriors jumped out to a 17-10 first quarter lead.  The Lady Devils managed to trim Jefferson's lead by 3 in the 2nd quarter behind a pair of 3-point shots by Tianca Evans.  Warren County went to the locker room at half-time trailing by the score of 26-22.

The Lady Devils took control in the 2nd half.  Tianca Evans scored 7 consecutive points to tie the game at the end of the 3rd quarter, 33-33.  Tomeka Harris then took over in the 4th quarter and scored 8 consecutive points and 10 for the quarter to lead the Devils to a 52-48 point victory.  The win gave the Lady Devils a split in the season series with Jefferson County.

Tianca Evans led the scoring for the Lady Devils with 19 points.  Also in double digits for the night was Tomeka Harris with 16 points and Raneisha Andrews with 10 points.  Tyjah Hill added 4 points and 7 rebounds.  Shea Kuhn also contributed 3 points.
Richard Wilburn

While the Lady Devils earned a hard fought victory, the boy's game was never really in doubt for Warren County.  The Screaming Devils led at the end of the first quarter by the score of 17-13.  The Screaming Devils continued to add to their lead in the first half as they went to the locker room up by 10 with the half-time scoreboad showing the score of 40-30.

Warren County would add 21 points in the 3rd quarter.  Jabari Wilson contributed almost half of the 3rd quarter scoring with 10 points.

The Warriors would mount a charge in the 4th quarter, however the Screaming Devils held on for the win by the score of 77-69.  The win gave the Screaming Devils a sweep in the season series against Jefferson County.

Jabari Wilson led the scoring for the contest with 19 points and 5 rebounds.  Ed'Ricus Williams scored 15 points and 6 rebounds.  Also in double digits for the night was Richard Wilburn with 13 points, and Bentrayvious Ramsey and Jeremy Norris each had 12 points.  Norris also added 19 rebounds for the contest.

The Lady Devils are scheduled to take the court against GMC Tuesday 4:30 at Washington-Wilkes in the first round of the region tournament.

It appears that Friday's victory will be the last of the season for the Warren County boys.  The Screaming Devils earned the number 3 seed out of their sub-region and were scheduled to face Hancock Central in the region tournament in Wilkinson County Wednesday night.  All efforts were made to work with the members of Region 7 to swap seeds with Taliaferro County, thus giving Warren County the 4 seed and setting up a first round match-up with Wilkinson County instead of Hancock.  Unfortunately, those efforts fell on deaf ears.  As of Monday morning, the decision was made by Warren County officials to forfeit the game against Hancock Central.

Devils Drop Final Region Contest

The Screaming Devils travelled to Washington-Wilkes Tuesday night looking for a little momentum to take into the region tournament next week.  The girl's had already cemented a 2nd place standing in the subregion but were looking to avenge an earlier loss to the Tigers.  A win for the boys would improve their standings in the region and avoid a first round match-up against Hancock Central, the number two seed from the other side of the region.

The rematch between the Lady Devils and the Lady Tigers was probably the most anticipated game of the night for both schools.  The game pitted two of the top teams in the region against each other.  Warren County's girls have seen steady improvement as the year has progressed and their only sub-region loss came at the hands of Washington-Wilkes 3 weeks earlier.

The game was back-and-forth through much of the first half.  The Lady Devils found themselves trailing by 3 at the end of the first quarter and went to the locker room at the half down by the score of 24-22.

Warren County started the second half strong and quickly erased the slim 2 point half-time scoreboard deficient.  The Devils scored 8 unanswered points to take a 6 point lead.  The Lady Tigers quickly regained momentum however and retook the lead for good as Warren County seemed to tire in the closing quarter.  The Lady Devils fell to the Lady Tigers for the second time this season by the score of 62-48.

The boys game proved to be a total reversal of the first meeting between the two teams.  Warren County came out on top in that contest played in Warrenton by the score of 62-46.  It quickly became apparent that Washington-Wilkes would not fall quietly to the Devils at home.  Warren County was never able to build a sizable lead over the Tigers throughout the entire game.

Down by 1 late in the game, momentum seemed to shift towards the Warren County side of the court when Richard Wilburn stole the ball for Warren County and appeared to give the Devils the lead.  Wilburn was called for travelling however and the basket was waved off.  The Tigers went on to a 67-64 victory over the Devils.

Javoris Wilburn Signs with Albany State

Javoris Wilburn, a senior at Warren County High School, found out Monday that his football career will not end with the final game of the 2011 season on Albert J. Massey Field.  Wilburn committed to play for Albany State in exchange for a full scholarship and is expected to quickly become a factor for the Rams on the offensive and defensive line.

Wilburn knew from his first visit to Albany that he was destined to be a Ram.  When asked what led him to decide to attend Albany State over several other offers, Wilburn stated, "I just felt at home with the coaching staff and the school environment."  Javoris looks forward to continuing his learning while playing hard for the Rams.
