Lady Devils Compete in Summer Basketball League

The Warren County Lady Devils have completed summer league play with a record of 6 wins and 4 losses. New head coach, Jamaal Rhodes, used the league to improve the defensive skills of his team and to develop the scoring ability of all of his players.

Rising sophomore, Candice Warthen, led the league in scoring by averaging 17 points per game after putting up over 500 points in her freshman year with the Lady Devils. Opposing coaches were impressed, however, that Warren County is developing to the point where they are no longer solely dependant upon Warthen for points.

The Lady Devils only averaged 30 points per game due to the emphasis placed on defense this summer. According to Rhodes, "We did most of our work on the defensive end. This is where the most improvement has been shown because they are buying into the thought that if we play defense, we have a chance to win."

The summer roster consisted of seniors: Jameya Tolbert, Somone Hordens, and Shandrell Collins. junior: Lashadria Reynolds, sophomores: Lakerria Williams, Sondrea Hardin, Tynisha Harris, and Candace Warthen, and freshman: Takeisa Harris, Virginia King, and Tykesia Johnson.

The girls have dedicated their summer to improving. Three players (Tynisha Harris, Tykesia Johnson,& Takeisa Harris) almost turned down an opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. just to compete in the last three games. The Lady Devils plan on attending camp at Clayton State University July 15th thru the 19th and hope to continue to improve in anticipation of the upcoming season.
