Students excel in weight lifting competition

Steve Burley, a 9th grade student at Warren County High School, placed second out of about thirty students in his weight class at the Area 4 weight lifting competition held at Jefferson County High School on March 8. The participants competed in three different lifts including the bench press, the squat, and the power clean.

Burley had the best lift in the squat competition at 475 pounds. He also bench pressed 255 pounds and power cleaned 250 pounds. Burley's second place finish earns him a trip to the state weightlifting competition in Perry on March 22 where he will compete with some of the strongest students in the state.

Frank Ivey, also a freshman, turned in an excellent performance in the power clean competition. Ivey lifted 295 pounds. Ivey's performance placed him just under the weight lifted by 6'6", 350 pound, #1 offensive line prospect in the country, A.J. Harmon of Jefferson County.

Trophies were also given to Warren County students for winning the local competition among WCHS weightlifting students. Sean Heath took home honors for best powerclean at 265 lbs. and best bench press at 315 lbs.. Frank Ivey won the best squat at 545 pounds. Ivey also took home the strongest Screaming Devil award. Damian Johnson took the honor of most improved.
