The Screaming Devils completed region play Saturday at Hancock Central. Hancock Central played host for the second and third rounds of the Region 4 tournament. The weekend games were used to determine the seeding for the state tournament.
The Lady Devils put on an impressive performance Friday night against the Lady Bulldogs of GMC. Candice Warthen led the Devils to a 49-25 victory while contributing 34 points in the winning effort. The win set up a Saturday meeting with Hancock Central for the region championship. The Bulldogs of Hancock Central handed the Lady Devils their only regular season losses to a class A opponent.
Saturday's meeting between the Lady Devils and Hancock provided plenty excitement from the opening tip-off to the final buzzer. The first quarter ended with both teams tied at 9 points. Warren County took control in the second quarter and outscored the Lady Bulldogs by 10 to take a 27-17 lead into the locker room.
Hancock managed to narrow the Devils' lead in the third period to only 4 points. The 4th period began with Warren leading by the score of 35-31. Warren County's lead would not last as Hancock came from behind in the 4th period to win by a score of 53-47. Candice Warthen led all scorers for Warren County with 32 points.
The boys of Warren County had their hands full Friday night as they took on the Wilkinson County Warriors. The Warriors are a perennial top ranked team in the state. The Devils looked as if they might be able to make a game of it in the early going, but the depth and experience of the Warriors proved to be too much for the Devils to handle. Wilkinson County closed out the victory by the score of 81-41.
The Devils played Aquinas Saturday to decide 3rd and 4th place in the region. The Devils faced the Irish twice in the regular season with Aquinas narrowly coming out on top in both contests. The third meeting of the year between the two teams would yield similar results with Aquinas winning it, 62-55. Leading scorers for Warren County were Stanley Johnson with 22, Tae Erwin with 14, and Dondracus Dozier with 10 points.
The Lady Devils will play host to Emmanuel County Institute Friday, February 27 in the first round of the state playoffs. The boy's team will travel to Savannah Saturday, February 28 to take on Calvary in their first round game. Come out and support the Screaming Devils as they begin the state playoffs.
