Devil's Defense Dominates Against Chiefs

While Warren County's offensive has been putting up impressive numbers this season, the Devil defense gives credence to the old saying that defense wins championships.  The Screaming Devils had only given up 16 points in three games and turned in their most impressive showing Friday night by holding the McCormick Chiefs scoreless in a 48-0 victory at Albert J. Massey Field.

Warren County's first score of the night came when the Devil defense held the Chiefs on three straight plays and forced them to punt from their own endzone.  Ed'Ricus Williams came from the outside untouched for the blocked punt and Warren County was awarded a safety after the ball went through the back of the endzone for a 2-0 lead.

The Chiefs then kicked off to the Devils and despite trying to keep the ball out of the hands of Jabari Wilson on the opening kick-off, Wilson managed to field this kick at the Warren County 37 yard line.  Wilson returned the kick 63 yards for the Devil's second score of the night to give Warren County an 8-0 lead.

The Devil defense would once again hold the Chiefs on their second possession and give Warren County's offense excellent field position to set up yet another scoring opportunity in the first quarter for the Devils.  Devarius Davis ran the ball down to the McCormick 1 yard line to set up a short touchdown run for Wilson on the next play to extend the lead for Warren County.

Warren County would score 4 times in the second quarter.  Wilson found the endzone twice on runs of 5 yards and 4 yards for touchdowns.  Wilson would also complete a 65 yard pass to Williams for a touchdown on a busted play when a bad snap forced Wilson to improvise.  "I was just going to scramble and try to get a few yards when I looked up and saw Ed standing in the middle of the field all alone," stated Wilson.

Ricardo Jones cemented his best performance of the season with a 48 yard run for a touchdown with 2:47 to go in the second quarter.  The touchdown by Jones gave the Devils a 41-0 lead going into half-time.

With over a 40 point lead after the first half of the game, the second half was played with a running clock mostly by Warren County's J.V. squad.  The Devils would score once more when Daniel Spence recovered a blocked punt at the end of the third quarter for a touchdown.  The extra point by Williams gave Warren County a 48-0 lead.

The Devil defense gave Warren County a short field to operate on for much of the night, leading to low rushing totals for the Devil running game.  Ricardo Jones led all rushers for the night with 73 yards on only 4 carries.  Jabari Wilson rushed for 58 yards on 9 carries with 3 rushing touchdowns.  Devarius Davis also rushed for 48 yards on 10 carries and Jacquez Menchaca added 14 yards on 4 carries.  Ed'Ricus Williams led the receiving for Warren County with 1 reception for 65 yards.  Dextrell Norris also had 2 receptions for 15 yards.

The victory improved Warren County to 4-0 for the season for the first time since 1989 and sets up a big region show down against the Red Devils of Lincoln County next week.  The Red Devils are also 4-0 after defeating Greenbrier by a score of 43-13 Friday night.  Warren County's last victory over the Red Devils came in 1971.  Larry Campbell took charge as the head coach for Lincoln County in 1972 and is undefeated in 36 games against the Screaming Devils.  This year's meeting between the Devils will be played at Buddy Bufford Field in Lincolnton.  Game time is set for 7:30.
