Screaming Devils Shine in Scrimmage Against Oglethorpe

Third year Warren County head coach, Cherrard Freeman, led his Screaming Devils into Friday night's scrimmage against Oglethorpe County with high hopes for the start of the 2015 season. His team quickly proved that they were ready to meet his expectations.

The Screaming Devils shut out Oglethorpe County by the score of 20-0 with a more mature and physical team than what Warren County fans have seen in recent years. This year's team has seven seniors, three more than last year. The Devils also have nine juniors. Most of these upperclassmen have seen significant playing time over the past three years as Warren County has worked to rebuild its football program.

The Devils spent much of the first half of Friday night's contest shaking off the rust of the offseason. After numerous false start penalties stalled the first few offensive drives of the contest, the Devils managed to put together a sustained drive late in the 2nd quarter. Facing a 4th and long deep in Patriot territory, Jarvis Collins connected with senior My'Kuan Loney for a 14 yard touchdown pass. Timothy Seals ran it in for the two point conversion and Warren County held an 8-0 lead at the half.

Coming out of the locker room, both coaches put their JV squads on the field and switched to a running clock for the 3rd quarter. The underclassmen for Warren County wasted no time in showing that they were eager to contribute to this year's campaign. Freshman Maleek Evans broke loose for a 54 yard touchdown run on his first carry to give the Devils a 14-0 lead early in the 3rd quarter. The Devil defense held the patriots to three plays and a punt. The Devils took over on the 46 yard line and handed the ball once again to Evans. In what appeared to be an exact replay of his previous run, Evans rumbled 54 yards for his second score of the quarter in only his second carry, putting the Devils up by a score of 20-0.

Maleek Evans led Warren County in rushing with 108 yards and 2 touchdowns on only 2 carries. Timothy Seals rushed for 42 yards on 6 carries. Johnquezus Neal carried the ball two times for 44 yards. Jermaine Berry also rushed for 21 yards on 5 carries.

Jarvis Collins proved to be more than ready to take over the quarterback duties in his sophomore year. Collins rushed for 21 yards and passed for 80 yards in an offensive that is designed to spread the field more than in years past. Collins connected twice with Stedman Hall for 31 yards, twice with Jermaine Berry for 35 yards, and once with My'Kuan Loney for 14 yards.

Coach Freeman was impressed by the heart showed by his team both during and after the game. Freeman stated, "Our kids played harder and with more heart than I have seen them play the past two years that I've been here." Coach Freeman also commented on how hard his team has worked this past year during the offseason to prepare. After an impressive win, on a warm, muggy night, the Devils were running sprints immediately after the game before the fans even left the field. Freeman added, "The guys came to me and said they weren't tired and asked if they could run sprints. That's the kind of dedication we've been working to build."

Warren County hits the road this weekend for a short trip to take on the Grovetown Warriors in a final scrimmage before opening the season the following week against Putnam county. Game time Friday is set for 7:30 at Grovetown High School.
