Lady Devils Finish a Successful Summer

After an exciting month of June basketball, the Lady Devils continued their hard work as they traveled to Cookeville Tennessee for a three day camp at Tennessee Tech University. The camp, which was held July 23 to the 25, hosted 21 teams and was played in three different gyms.

The Lady Devils competed in 9 highly competitive games finishing with a record of 4-5. The camp started pretty well with the Lady Devils winning their first game before dropping the next 3 in a row, all of which were played on the first day. The second day was much better as the Lady Devils finished with 2 wins and 1 loss. Also on the second day of games Candice Warthen was selected to play in the All-Star game where she finished as the leading scorer with 9 points. The third and final day ended with the Lady devils going 1-1 and having what Coach Rhodes called a “Confidence boosting performance” by Tynisha Harris who scored a career high 11 points in a first game win.

“Overall, this camp was about more than basketball”, says Coach Rhodes. “Many of our kids had never been out of the state of Georgia let alone play 9 games in 2 and half days. This trip was about relationship building, seeing and experiencing new things, and bonding together as a TEAM. We did all of those things and outside of basketball, team building activities are the most important things that help to build a successful program.”

With the amount of work put in this summer the Lady Devils believe they have a chance to be one of the top teams in the region. Coach Rhodes states, “They believe that they have a chance to compete for a Region Title in the next few years. I know that sounds far fetched given the number of wins we’ve had in the past couple of years but at some point you have to believe, even if no one else does.” The Lady Devils finished the summer with a record of 10-9.

What an unbelievable time that camp was. I am the coach at Halls high school in Knoxville Tennessee and I can tell you that you guys can be super proud of your girls and your new coach. He will turn things around there. He has lots of energy and works hard. It's hard to put into words how touched i was personally and how my whole team was touched with the love and frienships they experienced on this trip. We are an all white school that has had a history of racism in our community. Sometimes It takes these teenagers to show adults that you have to be like Christ and see far past the color of ones skin. Your girls and your coach are trmendous examples of this and i say again expect big things in your community from these girls and your coach. Good luck guys and i hope to see you in Knoxville next year.

First to the girls from Warren County Screaming Devils basketball team, what a pleasure it was to get and know you this summer at camp. My girls have talked of nothing else since we have been back. They absolutely loved you guys and miss you bunches. What a tremendous blessing you have been to my team and myself. Now to your community, I hope you realize what a special team and and new coach you have. I coach in Knoxville and we have an all white school where we have had issues with racism in our community. It meant a lot to them to see your girls reach out to them with so much compassion and love. You guys were hilarious. It was so refreshing to see both groups look past the color of each others skin just like Christ does. You guys, I also hope you know how lucky you guys are to have such a terrific coach. HE WILL NOT ONLY WIN BUT CHANGE LIVES THERE. Coach good luck and girls i hope to see you over here in spring or summer. WE LOVE YOU! By the way you will have to teach me soldier boy lol!
