Farewell to Legion Field

Hundreds of Warren County football fans from across the years turned out Thursday night to bid farewell to Legion Field. Milledge Samuels, the long time voice of the Screaming Devils, served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening. Samuels introduced each speaker as they brought back memories of past games, championships, players, and coaches from the field's forty-eight year history.

The night began with former school superintendent, George Holliman addressing the crowd and recounting many of the former Warren County coaches that have led the Screaming Devils into battle at Legion Field. Warren County graduate and current Board of Education member, James Newsome then recounted many interesting statistics surrounding Legion Field. Newsome stated that at the time of it's construction, Legion Field was expected to serve the community for twenty-four years. Newsome emotionally stated, "Legion Field had served it's purpose far longer than expected." Newsome then recounted many of the records from Legion Field, including the first points scored, the first victory, the most points scored in a game, and the most points given up in a game.

Two former coaches then took the podium to invoke memories of the glory days of Warren County football. Bobby Thigpin, former athlete, coach, and current teacher spoke of the championship era of the 1960's. Thigpin also mentioned the many all-state players that have come through Legion Field. Antonio Hill, also a former star player and coach of the Screaming Devils then challenged those in attendance to continue and build upon the community support that is vital to any championship program.

The program also included a performance by the Warren County Band and the reading of a letter from one of the former Warren County band directors. After closing remarks from Superintendent Carey, many in the crowd travelled to the high school to inspect the new stadium.
